Welcome to my town here in the U .S.
2
This small town, Asheville, North Carolina, where I live.
3
Today I'm inviting you to walk around downtown with me.
4
I don't know what's going to happen.
5
We're going to pass a lot of stuff, see a lot of people, and I'm going to teach you English along the way.
6
I'm going to talk about whatever we see
7
and hopefully you'll be able to learn a lot of useful vocabulary and see something interesting along the way.
8
If you're new here, hi, I'm Vanessa from SpeakEnglishWithVanessa .com, and I have been teaching real life English here on my
9
YouTube channel for over the past 10 years to now more than 7 million of you.
10
Thank you so much for learning English with me.
11
And like always, I have created a free worksheet where you can learn all of the expressions
12
that you're about to hear today.
13
Plus, I have been doing this a lot lately.
14
I'm going to add a free speaking practice so that you can practice all of these words,
15
all of the sentences, and really be able to use this when you go out into the real world.
16
So how can you get the worksheet plus the bonus speaking practice?
17
All you need to do is click the link in the description and enter your name and email address,
18
and voila, it will land in your email inbox.
19
This is my gift to you.
20
Okay, are you ready to get started?
21
My husband Dan is going to try to walk backwards throughout the town as I walk around.
22
We'll see how it goes.
23
All right, let's jaywalk and cross the street.
24
In the US, there are crosswalks, but it's not required to use them.
25
You won't get in trouble if you don't use them.
26
I know in some countries, it is pretty serious if you use a crosswalk or not, but I didn't.
27
Don't tell anyone, but nobody really cares.
28
So here we are just on a side street and I want to show you something.
29
Do you know what this is called?
30
This is a parking meter and you need to pay the parking meter if you're going to park on the street.
31
But we did not park on the side of the street.
32
We parked instead in a parking garage.
33
This one actually has a really cool art on the outside of it.
34
We parked in a parking garage because it's cheaper and we are going to go see a play downtown.
35
We're walking to the theater right now.
36
So I didn't want to pay a lot of money to park on the side of the road.
37
So we parked in a parking garage and you can do that pretty much in any city that you go to.
38
It's a pretty useful thing.
39
All right, let's keep going.
40
I'm going to show you a staple of Asheville life.
41
One of the staple coffee shops in Asheville is one that actually my husband used to work at.
42
And it has a unique feature that seems not very American,
43
but at the same time, it is uniquely American.
44
Let's go and see.
45
Come on.
46
Do you see what I mean?
47
This is not an American bus.
48
This is a British double -decker bus, but it has been transformed into a coffee shop and it's pretty cool.
49
It's a cool place to get a drink.
50
There's not much seating as you can imagine because inside is the coffee shop,
51
but let's go walk into the courtyard and see what it looks like.
52
Come on.
53
You remember these good old days working here?
54
I do.
55
It's been a while though.
56
It's been a while.
57
Alright, let's keep going on the street and see what there is to see.
58
So Asheville is known for a lot of handmade crafts
59
and art and a lot of little shops will have handmade mugs
60
or paintings and these types of things
61
that it's really cool you can see who made them
62
you can even go visit their studios in a lot of places
63
and downtown there's not as many studios for making those things
64
but they sell them in a lot of shops so let's keep looking
65
what i appreciate about here downtown asheville compared to other small
66
towns in the u .s a lot of small towns in the US, their downtown area is just dead.
67
There's not much going on.
68
There's hardly any restaurants or shops and no people are going there.
69
I've lived in a lot of different small towns where that's the case, but Asheville's busy.
70
You can see a lot of people are walking around.
71
A lot of these people live here or they're tourists visiting from the local area, maybe one hour away or 50 minutes away, something like this.
72
And it's a place that people actually enjoy being, as opposed to a lot of downtowns in the US that are kind of non -existent anymore.
73
All right, let's keep going.
74
I wanna show you one of the most popular stores, downtown Asheville, and it is Mass General Store.
75
Inside is everything, including, if you like candy, the biggest candy selection you will ever see in your life.
76
So I wanna walk around, and I'm just going to walk around the store and show you what there is to see.
77
It is very cool.
78
I think it's quite fun.
79
Let's go.
80
Wow.
81
Now this is a very Asheville outfit right here.
82
Oh my gosh, their kid stuff is so cute.
83
Tiny little jackets.
84
all right you know you're just here for the candy let's go see
85
so let me tell you about what some of these things are called in English first of all
86
this is a stuffed animal when i was a kid we called them stuffed animals
87
but now kids call them stuffies like this is a stuffy call it what you want
88
but here there's a lot of different types of chocolates caramels
89
because in the u .s we call this caramel not caramel
90
caramels and this is a classic kids candy especially around easter time
91
because they like to hide jelly beans inside Easter eggs and it's like a common Easter activity.
92
This is also a very popular one.
93
Hershey's Kisses.
94
This is what my kids like to have in their stockings for Christmas. Of course, classics.
95
Reese's Cups, one of my favorites.
96
Do you know what this is?
97
it's called a Tootsie Pop and inside of it is a Tootsie Roll
98
which is kind of chocolate kind of not it's kind of gooey I used to love these as a kid
99
and we call this a lollipop
100
or a sucker either one oh do they have these in your country it's a necklace candy necklace
101
and these are Smarties it's like little tart powdery kind of candies
102
and you can wear it as a necklace
103
and then eat it i used to love
104
this too as a kid oh this is something very american have you ever seen
105
this salt water taffy salt water taffy is kind of like the texture of caramel
106
but it's different flavors and sweet and it's always associated with the beach I guess
107
because it's made with salt water somehow I have no idea how it's made
108
but they are very good yeah you want to see some old school candies these
109
I don't know who chooses these anymore over the the less old things
110
but a bit honey
111
or these uh very old type of hard candies we call these hard candies these are the ones
112
that you would find in my grandma's house
113
and they're probably still like 40 years old at her house oh these are these are the thing
114
that i would always try to get um at halloween these
115
These are called a bullseye or it's a cow tail.
116
If it's long, it's called a cow tail.
117
If it's small like this, it's called a bullseye and it's not caramel, but it's so good.
118
If you come to the US, try it.
119
Look at this one.
120
Gummy brains.
121
I've never seen that before.
122
They have gummy everything gummy eyeballs, gummy brains, gummy snakes.
123
That's pretty good.
124
Gummy building blocks with like Legos that are gummies.
125
Wow.
126
What?
127
Do you know what this is?
128
This is a jawbreaker.
129
So usually, usually they're this size and you can't chew it.
130
It breaks your jaw.
131
You have to suck on it for a really long time but this what
132
It's so big.
133
You know what?
134
These sour straws, they're sour sugar gummy straws.
135
Let me show you.
136
These, when I was a kid, we used to sneak out of our neighborhood and find any kind of change that we could,
137
like quarters and dimes with our friends.
138
We would sneak to the grocery store and we maybe had like a dollar and 25 cents.
139
We hardly had any money, but we would buy these and eat them.
140
And it was always before dinner.
141
So we would come home.
142
If my mom's watching this, don't tell her.
143
We would go home, we'd eat them.
144
And then when it came time for dinner, we would pretend that we were so hungry.
145
Oh, I'm so hungry.
146
This dinner is so good because we didn't want to give away
147
that we had already eaten a whole pack of sour straws.
148
My secret safe with you, right?
149
Oh yeah.
150
Do you know what these are called?
151
wind chimes wind chimes we have one of these on our deck it's so peaceful and nice
152
there are t -shirts of every type
153
postcards
154
Asheville postcards oh these are some Asheville postcards I've never seen
155
sometimes when my students send me postcards I try to send them a postcard back
156
if I have their address and I try to buy cool Asheville postcards to send to them.
157
So now I know where to go.
158
I've been sending the same Asheville postcards for years.
159
This is the place to get them.
160
Oh, we got to see something.
161
What is in the Asheville popcorn mix?
162
It is popcorn with a purpose.
163
Okay.
164
White cheddar and salted caramel.
165
So that is what makes Asheville white cheddar popcorn and salted caramel.
166
A little salty, a little sweet.
167
That's probably about true.
168
All right, let's go out of the store and keep walking down the street.
169
Oh yeah, this is a famous restaurant.
170
The chef had lots of awards.
171
It's Spanish pork and Spanish inspired dishes.
172
Tapas stuff.
173
We've been there a couple of times and it's pretty good.
174
All right, let's keep going.
175
This is a classic Asheville shop called Hippie Shop.
176
Everything, lots of tie -dye, lots of stained glass, lots of beads, lots of feathers.
177
Lots of...
178
Everything.
179
Everything.
180
Everything hippie.
181
Everything hippie.
182
This is what some people say is the best Indian restaurant in Asheville, Mayfield.
183
I've been there once and it was pretty good,
184
but it was a while ago so I can't say speak to it but it was good enough.
185
Wow they did win a lot of awards.
186
Best of Asheville 2023, 24, diner's choice 25, 26.
187
Okay maybe you should go there if you like Indian food and if you're Indian and you go there let us know.
188
Let us know if it is actually authentic
189
And if you're Japanese, you can try the ramen and tell us if it is actually authentic too.
190
I have never been to this ramen place, but I've been to another one in Asheville that I thought was really good,
191
but I'm not the ramen expert.
192
But as you can see, there's a lot of international food and international cuisine options.
193
I think it's really typical in the US and especially Asheville's known for food.
194
So oftentimes restaurants here will use local ingredients and then they'll say that too.
195
So if they don't say they're using local ingredients, they probably aren't.
196
But a lot of restaurants will say farm to table.
197
And that means that they know the farm that it came from and now it's on your table.
198
So it is locally produced, locally made.
199
All right, let's keep going.
200
We are now going to go up here to the center.
201
This is kind of the little center square there's often festivals
202
or music going on I don't think there is anything going on tonight
203
but let's just go over there and then we're going to go see some chocolate let's go
204
everybody around here better know I'm here all right we got the walk sign let's go all right so
205
So here we have the best place in Asheville.
206
Oh, the sun.
207
It's very bright.
208
Okay.
209
This is the Asheville Art Museum.
210
I have to say, I've never been there.
211
I don't know why I've never been there.
212
Maybe it's because I have too many kids.
213
I can't go in art museums.
214
A lot of people really like it, but over here is the crowning glory of cool places in Asheville.
215
So this is the place.
216
I love chocolate.
217
I know not everyone's a chocolate fan, but it's obviously popular because French Broad Chocolates is killing it.
218
They have a great business now and they have a whole other location in Asheville too,
219
so I'm very happy for them that their business is working out
220
and it has been for a really long time
221
so french bond chocolates is a place dan also used to work he knows a lot of the coffee shops
222
and places like that around here
223
from working here and they go to all the farms the cacao farms
224
and they know the farmers and this is really what i was telling you about before
225
that term farm to table you'll see that at a lot of restaurants
226
and here because they know the farmers
227
and then they process the cacao themselves in their own factory here in asheville
228
and they make a lot of tasty things um lots of they have ice cream
229
they have little truffles they have hot chocolate they have
230
so many different chocolate things and i think it's not too busy right now
231
so i guess we should go all right let's go in Thank you.
232
So the one thing is when you get farm to table food, it is expensive.
233
So you have to be willing to shell out some money.
234
For example, let's take a look.
235
this is a this is a box of they call it truffles
236
or bonbons and it's these in here you can get six
237
and this costs 20 for six of these
238
but you know what I always buy these for people as a gift because everyone, at least everyone in Asheville knows, this is really special chocolate.
239
So it feels worthwhile to spend a lot of money on something that's Asheville crafted.
240
Very special.
241
And yeah, it's a really good gift.
242
So I just bought these actually earlier today at their other location as a gift for some people.
243
But I'm not going to buy anything to go.
244
Let's go to their front and order something good.
245
When Dan used to work here, I used to come here and plan videos for you.
246
I would sit in the corner with my laptop,
247
and it was the best not job ever for me because all of the staff knew that I was Dan's wife.
248
I wasn't just like a regular customer.
249
So if something broke, like a piece of cake broke, and they couldn't sell it,
250
they said, Vanessa, do you want this? or if they had something new that they wanted to test out on someone,
251
I would get to try it.
252
It was the best.
253
It's the best job that
254
Dan has ever had for me.
255
What was the most popular thing that people bought when you were working here?
256
Or the most common thing?
257
Honestly, probably a chocolate chip cookie.
258
Yeah.
259
Yeah, that and there's liquid chocolate.
260
Oh, yeah.
261
Hot chocolate.
262
Yeah.
263
it's not just hot chocolate like it doesn't have water
264
or milk at it it's literally just like a melted chocolate bar
265
that you can drink so good so decadent and dangerous you can't have
266
that too much when you worked here did you eat
267
that a lot like did you try little things a lot
268
oh yeah ice cream actually is mainly what got me oh yeah yeah
269
i'm gonna get the chocolate crème brûlée please
270
and that's all for here please all right
271
so I'm going to buy this with my card
272
and there's a little touch pad here
273
and that's basically all I have to do it's
274
so simple just touch it and the crème brûlée is mine
275
and yours you can also tip
276
but you also have the option to tip with your card at the same time
277
you don't have to tip with cash but if you have cash
278
They say cash is king.
279
It's very appreciated to give a cash tip, but you can tip with your card too,
280
which is what I'm going to do because I don't have any cash.
281
Here it comes.
282
Thank you.
283
Let's go sit in the window.
284
okay so here we have our chocolate creme brulee
285
if you're french you might not have ever had chocolate creme brulee before
286
but it is beautiful and they get to crack the top
287
And inside, mmm, this is beautiful chocolate.
288
Mmm, very rich.
289
It tastes like smooth chocolate icing.
290
all right we're going to pause this for a moment eat our creme brulee together
291
and then we'll get back to our little tour on the way to the theater
292
okay let's go jaywalk again we're crossing to the downtown city square and not getting run over.
293
And this is one thing that I find slightly disappointing about American downtowns is that this is not a hangout zone.
294
Like this square has a lot of potential.
295
And I feel like the European cities I've been to, the downtown square, there's like teenagers hanging out,
296
There's little markets going on and sometimes they have events here, but this isn't the hangout zone.
297
You know, there's a nice fountain.
298
That's cool.
299
But it's not the vibe of European downtown city centers that I like a lot.
300
But there is a nice view.
301
Let's walk down this way and you can see some of the classic buildings
302
so this type of architecture um it's called art deco a lot of the buildings around here
303
if you know anything about architecture
304
which i don't really they are like classic art deco
305
so you can see here this style this style here it's considered art deco is like a 1920s thing
306
I'm not the person to ask about architecture but Asheville is kind of known for that style of building.
307
Let's walk on down here.
308
So you can see here some more classic art deco buildings
309
and some covered by trees
310
but this is I want to talk about the ground for a moment in the U .S we call this the sidewalk,
311
but this sidewalk is made of bricks and I think that's really nice.
312
I know a lot of European cities, all the sidewalks are made of bricks, but here it's not completely common that that's the case.
313
I think some people are taking pictures, so let's go over this way and not get in their way.
314
Yeah, I think we should walk down the street.
315
We still have about 15 minutes before we need to be at our play
316
and the play is just going to be right over here.
317
So are you willing to walk down this way with me and we'll go around the block.
318
Okay.
319
I love these sycamore trees.
320
The bark looks so cool.
321
Actually, let's stop for a second.
322
I got to show you.
323
Look at this.
324
It looks like a giraffe.
325
It looks like someone peeled it off, but that's how it's supposed to be.
326
Our neighbor has one of these trees and they're just so beautiful.
327
All right, let's keep going.
328
If I can complain one more time about American downtowns, this building is Biltmore corporate offices.
329
Biltmore is the biggest house in the U .S and it's in Asheville.
330
It's the biggest tourist attraction in Asheville
331
but I think American downtowns could use a little bit more storefront
332
or like yeah storefront space
333
and this is completely unused for offices you know
334
this isn't like there could be nice little shops there could be nice little restaurants
335
or I don't know something yeah
336
so this is prime territory right prime land to be able to do something with
337
and the whole half of the downtown square
338
is that kind of a bummer but you know i guess you can only get what you can get right
339
some people might call this a skyscraper um ashville is not known for its skyscrapers there's not many skyscrapers here
340
but um I guess this is the tallest
341
or one of the tallest buildings here most buildings are what would you say
342
this is let's take a look one two three four five stories tall that's pretty common
343
but I guess there's also a few skyscrapers classic American fire truck truck.
344
Yeah.
345
There's some very nice music being played across the street there.
346
I don't know if you can hear it past all the other noise.
347
Come on.
348
It's always nice whenever you see people playing on the side of the street like that, it is called busking.
349
I am busking, he is busking.
350
And it means you're playing music on the side of the
351
street with like a little cup trying to get some money and Asheville's known for buskers.
352
There's a lot of buskers and if you stop
353
and listen to a busker for like a couple minutes
354
it's nice to drop a dollar in just you know supporting some musicians along the side of the street.
355
They usually have to get a permit.
356
It's like an official thing.
357
You can't just sit down on the side of the road and start playing music.
358
So before you cross the street in a city center, especially a busy place like this you should push the button
359
if nobody else has and it will beep
360
and then it will light up the crosswalk sign
361
this is the one place i know we talked about uh jaywalking
362
but this is the one place when you probably shouldn't not
363
that you'll get in trouble but it's just not safe
364
because there's actually a lot of cars and a lot of people and i don't want to get hit
365
yeah i know i've heard some people say
366
that ashville is the paris of the south like the south of the u .s i don't believe it
367
but it is nice for a little city center in the south of the u .s
368
maybe i'm throwing too much shade on ashville as in it's not paris but it's a nice place to walk around,
369
you can see local shops and here's some buskers, you know, a little bit of culture going on.
370
Oh, this coffee shop used to be on the other side of the street
371
and now they're here and they have pastries that are very nice.
372
Dan and I used to go on a date to old Europe
373
and it is one of the only coffee shops downtown that
374
Dan has not worked for.
375
So I want to take a little pause for moment right here
376
i want to show you the trash cans this is a lovely moment guys
377
so this is becoming more popular in the us but you will see recycling and landfill landfill is just trash
378
you can see it even says on the side landfill recycling in the us recycling is anything
379
that you could possibly ever recycle you put in there you don't separate it you just throw all your plastic
380
and glass and paper in the same bin.
381
Does it actually get recycled really efficiently?
382
I don't know, but there is an option.
383
So as you're walking along the side of the street, you can throw your trash in the recycling or the landfill.
384
All right, let's keep going because it is almost time to go to our play and I don't want to be late.
385
So this place, the Mellow Mushroom, is a really popular pizza restaurant in Asheville.
386
Excuse me, a popular pizza restaurant in Asheville.
387
And this is the original location.
388
You'll see them in a couple different towns too, but they have an interesting vibe.
389
It's not necessarily like the world's greatest pizza, but it's a popular spot and they have a fun Asheville vibe, I would say.
390
Bowling balls stuck in the wall.
391
You know, lots of colors, fun statues.
392
And let's continue and finish our tour in just a minute.
393
We're about to get to the theater.
394
One thing that I like that is becoming more popular in downtown areas is this kind of outdoor seating idea.
395
In a lot of countries, it's so common to just sit at a little table in a cafe on the corner.
396
But in the US, it is not very common, especially in a busy downtown area like this to have any kind of outdoor seating.
397
I love this though.
398
I think it is great, especially in Asheville.
399
We have awesome weather.
400
Most of the year it's really pleasant outside like right now.
401
So to be able to have outdoor seating is my go -to thing.
402
Whenever I go to a restaurant, if there's an option to sit outside, that's usually what I choose.
403
So it's nice to see more restaurants opting to have seats outside.
404
Wow, look at this tree.
405
Its roots are bulging through the sidewalk.
406
It's going to take over the sidewalk.
407
Wow.
408
I really like that they kept some big old trees downtown.
409
A lot of downtowns just cut down trees or they just have these little tiny trees, but I appreciate that there's greenness even in downtown.
410
Oh, this is a nice little view.
411
We can see the building that we saw earlier, the tall Art Deco Classic building.
412
And our theater is right over here.
413
It is about time for us to go to see the play.
414
And I want to thank you so much for joining me on this walking tour.
415
I hope you learned a lot of interesting vocabulary, English phrases.
416
The best way to really remember these is to use them right away.
417
So I recommend downloading the free PDF worksheet for all of these expressions and inside the worksheet is a bonus speaking practice
418
Where you're going to be able to practice speaking with me and using those phrases out loud
419
That way they will stick in your memory and when you go out into the real world
420
You'll be able to describe your downtown area and describe where you live
421
So the only way to get that worksheet is to click the link in the description
422
Enter your name and email address and it will land in your email inbox
423
That is my gift to you.
424
So thank you so much for learning English with me.
425
And I hope that you will join me next Friday for a new lesson here on my YouTube channel.
426
Bye.
427
But wait, do you want more?
428
I recommend watching this video next where you will go into a real English American coffee shop
429
and you will learn how to order coffee in English plus some little tips
430
and tricks if you're not quite a coffee person like I am.
431
I hope to see you there.

Что такое техника Shadowing?
