5
Welcome back everyone to this week's OnTalk and welcome back Mr. Mike Yes good to be back
6
So in the last episode we went over your daily routine and how it has changed during the coronavirus
7
And today we would like to talk about one of the highlights of foreigners in Hanong Bay
8
Which is the cuisine for Vietnamese food
9
So you've been here for quite a long time
10
and you've all probably already tasted many dishes of Vietnamese people
11
and here on the table today we have probably one of the most authentic
12
and traditional Vietnamese street food which is bread or Rind me
13
Sandwich It's a sandwich
14
On French bread that's squeezed.
15
But it is delicious by the way.
16
It's making me hungry right now.
17
You've already had, I hope, many of these.
18
Many, but they're all different.
19
That's what I don't understand.
20
I don't think there seems to be one recipe for a bag.
21
Sometimes there's chicken, sometimes there's beef, sometimes there's this strange type of beef in there that I don't even know it's meat.
22
I like the vegetables.
23
One of my favorite things is the cilantro there
24
and that's a nice savory type of bite that brings the baggie a nice flavor.
25
That's the beauty of it.
26
Yeah.
27
So before we go any further, would you mind having your bite just to see how today's baggie is different?
28
Not at all and it
29
It looks fresh.
30
It's still hot.
31
It's still hot.
32
Wow, all right, let's bite it.
33
Delicious.
34
This is the stuff I don't know.
35
What is that, beef?
36
Pork?
37
That's dried pork.
38
A little dry, a little dry, but still delicious.
39
So besides fried meat, we obviously have a one variety of dishes that people here, along generally likes to eat daily
40
so to you as a foreigner what dish interests you
41
or excites you the most well okay that's uh there's a plethora of vietnamese cuisine
42
that i really enjoy along with many of the foreigners as you said
43
and we do come here for the food
44
but i also want to say that my my diet
45
and my palate have changed over the past couple of years
46
when i first came here in 2012 I could not get enough of bun cha
47
and I had to have it I had to have it every day
48
I mean the aroma the smell the greasy well nice greasy delicious with the with the with the boom
49
and the little sauce on the side fantastic well
50
now eight years later I really can't eat
51
it I can't digest the pork is difficult for me I'm a little bit older
52
so I switched from bun cha to bun haisan.
53
Every day I like to have bun haisan
54
and there are many many many places obviously there's so much seafood out there you know fish,
55
bebe, I don't even know what it is in English crab,
56
fish crab, some shrimp and then that weird bebe one and I love that for breakfast.
57
Bagni also is great and then the traditional lunch, rice, some type of meat and vegetables but I like variety.
58
I like more than one vegetable.
59
Excellent choices.
60
It's how we do it around here.
61
Yeah, yeah.
62
So you obviously you like the phun chia, you like the phu thai saan.
63
So how about the iconic Vietnamese dish, the pho.
64
Do you like
65
Bun Hai San over the Pho?
66
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
67
And for the Pho, you can really only get the chicken or the beef.
68
I don't think you can get
69
Fa Hai San.
70
I found that earlier.
71
Yeah, yeah.
72
So I think it's a little more prevalent in the area, the chicken and the beef places, especially at night.
73
So at night, yeah, I'll have
74
Bun Fa with the beef.
75
Perfect for a cold day like this.
76
And I think that our viewers would love to know that.
77
How has your diet, or how has the disease changed from America to Vietnam?
78
What is the main difference?
79
Obviously, it's noodles.
80
Obviously, it's the amount of carbohydrates with all the rice, the lack of potatoes.
81
The green vegetables, which weeds don't even consider vegetables sometimes.
82
We see these green things growing in the street, and we go, and everybody goes, ZOW ZOW!
83
And we go that's a weed!
84
Yeah, so I'm not really sure what's the vegetable and what's not, but that's a big change from the diet.
85
A lot of people think because I'm American, they think, oh you love McDonald's and Burger King and Loteria.
86
No, I don't.
87
I'm really not a fan of fast food and I've never been to KFC.
88
We do have that stereotype going around.
89
We Vietnamese people obviously want to make the most out of our food.
90
As a foreigner, was it difficult for you to adjust to the cuisine or the food here?
91
Not at all.
92
I love Asian food.
93
I have loved Asian food ever since I was a little kid and I sushi from Japan,
94
and bibimbap from Korea, the Chinese noodles no problems and so adjusting to Vietnamese diet was easy.
95
A piece of cake.
96
Easy breezy, lemon squeezy.
97
What dish would you recommend to other foreigners or your friends if they're coming from America to visit Vietnam?
98
Well, it depends if they want to go to Northern Vietnam food, Central Vietnam or Southern Vietnam food.
99
I mean, you know, being Vietnamese, that the cuisine is all different in all parts of the area.
100
For example, up north, they take the spring roll and they fry it.
101
And they put it in, you know what they put in,
102
they put it in noodles or they put it in over rice and they're deep fried.
103
Well, down in the south, they're fresh.
104
You can find them fresh here, but they're made out of a nice plate with butter like this.
105
All the fresh vegetables inside, but instead of the bread, they wrap it up.
106
And yeah, quite refreshing, low in calories because it's not fried.
107
A lot easier to eat for me.
108
So the fresh spring roll is delicious.
109
Like when you go to Vietnam, is there a dish that you cannot understand why Vietnamese people like it, but you yourself can't enjoy it?
110
Yeah, without a doubt there's a couple of them.
111
I mean the one that comes to mind immediately would be the stomach, intestine, whatever that is.
112
I don't even know how to say it and there's no way that I would be able to eat that.
113
What is that?
114
Is it stomach?
115
Is it intestine?
116
So it's been a pleasure talking to you and I bet the folks who can't wait to see you again on air.
117
So as usual, before we end the show, there's obviously a question just like last week.
118
Mr. Mike, please give the question of today.
119
Well, I'll tell you, since we talked, the theme has been food.
120
So since we talked about food today, here's a tricky one.
121
We talked about many dishes, but the question is what kind of paper,
122
what kind of paper is used to make spring rolls?
123
Now, don't say this kind of paper and don't say origami paper, okay?
124
But the answer lies somewhere out there in TV land.
125
And the first person to come back wins a...
126
Prize and mysterious prize.
127
Jack, it's been wonderful again.
128
Yeah, it's been wonderful talking to you.
129
And that's all for today, folks.
130
I'll see you next time.
131
See you next time.
