For stroke treatment evaluation we take them to get a CAT scan immediately to see if this type of stroke that they're having is due to a bleeding type of stroke or a stroke due to a blockage in the artery.

If the stroke is due to a blockage in the artery, we could potentially give them the clot-busting medication, the TPA, and if not, it's a different treatment controlling blood pressure and getting them to the neuro ICU would be important.

When we see stroke patients, it's important for us to look at the blood vessels.

We can do ultrasound of the carotid arteries just to look at the arteries in the neck,

as well as we can do an MR angiogram or a CAT scan and CT angiogram to look for or any narrowing that could potentially increase their risk for stroke.

We collaborate closely with the emergency department and they come in to try to get them the appropriate treatment, but once they are admitted for stroke,

we look at the patient's risk factors, if they have high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes, and if they do, we address those risk factors, either starting them on medication or adjusting medication.

Also, assessing them if they have any weakness.

having our physical therapists assess them to see if they need some physical therapy after the hospitalization to optimize their recovery.

The other thing that we try to do is arrange kind of follow-ups for them so that there is a continuity of care.
