「would rather」/「had better」
中級“Would rather” / “had better”
1.had better —
|---|---|
You'd better (= You had better) go now. |
You'd better not tell anyone. |
Hadn't we better call a taxi? |
It's going to rain. You'd better take an umbrella.
We'd better leave now, or we'll miss the train.
You'd better not be late for the interview.
'd better の 'd = had、'd rather の 'd = would です。
2.had better か should か
(You'd better pay me back!)。 上司や目上の人には should や「Maybe you could…」
You should read more English books.
The exam is tomorrow. You'd better go to bed early.
3.would rather —
否定は would rather not + 動詞。
I'd rather stay in tonight. I'm really tired.
I'd rather walk than take a taxi.
Would you rather have tea or coffee?
Shall we go to karaoke? — I'd rather not.
4.would rather +
I'd rather you didn't smoke in the car.

5.prefer、would prefer と would rather

| would prefer + to-verb (+ rather than + verb) | 今したいこと | I'd prefer to eat at home tonight. |
| would rather + verb (+ than + verb) | 今したいこと(よりくだけた言い方) | I'd rather eat at home tonight. |
| would prefer + person + to-verb | ほかの人にしてほしいこと | I'd prefer you to drive. |
| would rather + person + past | ほかの人にしてほしいこと | I'd rather you drove. |
つなぐ語を混同しないこと:prefer A to B(than ではない)、would rather A than B(to ではない):I prefer tea to coffee. / I'd rather have tea than coffee。
