“Would rather” / “had better”
1.Had better —
|---|---|
You'd better (= You had better) go now. |
You'd better not tell anyone. |
Hadn't we better call a taxi? |
It's going to rain. You'd better take an umbrella.
We'd better leave now, or we'll miss the train.
You'd better not be late for the interview.
ใน 'd better 'd = had ส่วนใน 'd rather 'd = would เวลาพูดเร็ว ๆ แบบกันเอง คนมักตัด 'd ทิ้ง (“You better go”) — เป็นภาษาไม่เป็นทางการ ในงานเขียนให้ใช้ 'd better หรือ had better
2.Had better หรือ should
(You'd better pay me back!) ถ้าพูดกับหัวหน้าหรือผู้ใหญ่ ใช้ should หรือ “Maybe you could…”
You should read more English books.
The exam is tomorrow. You'd better go to bed early.
3.Would rather —
would rather ('d rather) + กริยารูปเดิม (ไม่มี to) = อยากทำอะไรมากกว่าในสถานการณ์หนึ่ง ถ้าเปรียบเทียบสองการกระทำ: would rather + กริยา + than + กริยา (ทั้งคู่เป็นรูปเดิม) ปฏิเสธ: would rather not + กริยา
I'd rather stay in tonight. I'm really tired.
I'd rather walk than take a taxi.
Would you rather have tea or coffee?
Shall we go to karaoke? — I'd rather not.
4.Would rather +
เมื่ออยากให้คนอื่นทำ (หรือไม่ทำ) อะไร ใช้ would rather + ประธาน + Past Simple กริยาเป็นรูปอดีต แต่ความหมายคือตอนนี้ / อนาคต ปฏิเสธใช้ didn't “I'd rather you didn't” เป็นวิธีที่สุภาพมากในการปฏิเสธหรือขอให้ใครไม่ทำอะไร
I'd rather you didn't smoke in the car.
My parents would rather I studied medicine.
