간접의문문

간접의문문은 다른 문장 안에 들어간 질문입니다(Do you know…?, Could you tell me…?, I wonder…). 안에 들어간 질문은 평서문 어순, 즉 의문사 + 주어 + 동사를 쓰고, do / does / did는 사라집니다.

💡does / did가 사라지면 그 시제는 본동사로 옮겨 갑니다: What time does it open? → … what time it opens. Why did she leave? → … why she left.

1. 정중하게 물을 때, 특히 모르는 사람, 손님, 상사에게 — 직접 묻는 것보다 부드럽게 들립니다

• Excuse me, do you know where the nearest ATM is?

  실례합니다, 가장 가까운 ATM이 어디 있는지 아세요?

• Could you tell me how far it is to the airport?

  공항까지 얼마나 먼지 알려 주시겠어요?

• Would you mind telling me what you think of the plan?

  이 계획에 대해 어떻게 생각하시는지 말씀해 주시겠어요?

2. 궁금한 것이나 모르는 것을 말할 때 — 평서문이므로 마침표로 끝납니다

• I wonder what she wants for her birthday.

  그녀는 생일에 뭘 갖고 싶어 할까.

• I have no idea where he went last night.

  그가 어젯밤 어디에 갔는지 전혀 모르겠어요.

• I can't remember where I parked the car.

  차를 어디에 세웠는지 기억이 안 나요.

• 질문으로 시작하는 표현(?): Do you know…? / Could you tell me…? / Can you tell me…? / Do you have any idea…? / Would you mind telling me…? / Can you remember…?
• 평서문으로 시작하는 표현(.): I wonder… / I don't know… / I'm not sure… / I have no idea… / I'd like to know… / I can't remember…
• 문장 끝 부호는 안에 든 질문이 아니라 바깥 문장을 따릅니다.

Yes/No 의문문에는 의문사가 없으므로 if나 whether를 붙입니다. 뜻은 같지만 whether가 조금 더 격식 있고, or not과 함께 자주 씁니다.

• Do you know if the restaurant is open today?

  오늘 그 식당이 문을 여는지 아세요?

• I'm not sure whether it will rain or not.

  비가 올지 안 올지 잘 모르겠어요.

• It depends on whether we have enough time.

  시간이 충분한지에 달려 있어요. (전치사 뒤에는 whether만)

• I can't decide whether to buy it.

  그걸 살지 말지 못 정하겠어요. (to + 동사 앞에는 whether만)

who / what / which가 주어이면 직접의문문이 이미 평서문 어순(do/did 없음)이므로, 간접의문문에서도 바뀌는 것이 없습니다. 「주어 의문문과 목적어 의문문」 레슨도 참고하세요.

• Who broke the window? → Do you know who broke the window?

  누가 창문을 깼어요? → 누가 창문을 깼는지 아세요?

• What happened? → Can you tell me what happened?

  무슨 일이 있었어요? → 무슨 일이 있었는지 말해 줄래요?

하지만 be + 명사일 때는 be가 맨 뒤로 갑니다: Who is that man? → Do you know who that man is? (who is that man이 아님).

💡간접의문문은 지금 묻는 것이므로 시제를 옮기지 않습니다: Do you know where she lives? 시제를 옮기는 것은 다른 사람의 질문을 전할 때뿐입니다: She asked me where I lived — 「간접화법」 레슨을 참고하세요.

• ✗Do you know where is the post office?

  ✓Do you know where the post office is?

  안에 든 질문은 평서문 어순: 주어 + 동사.

• ✗I wonder what does she want for her birthday.

  ✓I wonder what she wants for her birthday.

  does를 빼고 본동사에 -s를 붙입니다.

• ✗Can you tell me does this bus go to Ben Thanh Market?

  ✓Can you tell me if this bus goes to Ben Thanh Market?

  Yes/No 의문문 → if/whether + 평서문.

• ✗Do you know how old is your grandfather?

  ✓Do you know how old your grandfather is?

  How old + 주어 + be.

• ✗Could you tell me where did you buy that jacket?

  ✓Could you tell me where you bought that jacket?

  did를 빼고 본동사를 과거형으로 씁니다.

• ✗I don't know where she's going?

  ✓I don't know where she's going.

  바깥 문장이 평서문이므로 마침표로 끝납니다.
