Perguntas indiretas

Intermédio

Indirect questions

Forma e uso

Do you know where … is? I wonder what …

1.Forma

Uma pergunta indireta é uma pergunta dentro de outra frase (Do you know…?, Could you tell me…?, I wonder…). A pergunta de dentro usa a ordem de frase afirmativa: palavra interrogativa + sujeito + verbo, e do / does / did desaparecem.

Pergunta diretaPergunta indireta
Where is the bus stop?Do you know where the bus stop is?
How much is this bag?Could you tell me how much this bag is?
What time does the bank open?Do you know what time the bank opens?
Why did she leave early?I wonder why she left early.
Is the shop open on Sundays?Do you know if the shop is open on Sundays?
Does this bus go to the airport? Can you tell me whether this bus goes to the airport?

Quando does / did desaparecem, o tempo verbal passa para o verbo principal: What time does it open? → … what time it opens. Why did she leave? → … why she left.

2.Quando usar

  • Excuse me, do you know where the nearest ATM is?

  • Could you tell me how far it is to the airport?

Poderia me dizer a que distância fica o aeroporto?

  • Would you mind telling me what you think of the plan?

  • I wonder what she wants for her birthday.

  • I have no idea where he went last night.

  • I can't remember where I parked the car.

Não lembro onde estacionei o carro.

  • Inícios que são perguntas (?): Do you know…? / Could you tell me…? / Can you tell me…? / Do you have any idea…? / Would you mind telling me…? / Can you remember…?
  • Inícios que são frases afirmativas (.): I wonder… / I don't know… / I'm not sure… / I have no idea… / I'd like to know… / I can't remember…

3.Perguntas de sim/não: if / whether

Uma pergunta de sim/não não tem palavra interrogativa, então acrescente if ou whether. Os dois significam a mesma coisa; whether é um pouco mais formal e muitas vezes vem com or not.

  • Do you know if the restaurant is open today?

  • I'm not sure whether it will rain or not.

  • It depends on whether we have enough time.

Depende de termos tempo suficiente. (depois de preposição, só whether)

  • I can't decide whether to buy it.

Não consigo decidir se compro ou não. (antes de to + verbo, só whether)

  • Who broke the window? → Do you know who broke the window?

Quem quebrou a janela? → Você sabe quem quebrou a janela?

  • What happened? → Can you tell me what happened?

O que aconteceu? → Pode me contar o que aconteceu?

Mas com be + substantivo, be vai para o final: Who is that man? → Do you know who that man is? (não: who is that man).

Perguntas indiretas não recuam o tempo verbal, porque você está perguntando agora: Do you know where she lives? Só se recua quando você relata a pergunta de outra pessoa: She asked me where I lived — veja a lição “Discurso indireto”.

5.Erros comuns

  • Do you know where is the post office?

Do you know where the post office is?

  • I wonder what does she want for her birthday.

I wonder what she wants for her birthday.

Tire o does e acrescente -s ao verbo principal.

  • Can you tell me does this bus go to Ben Thanh Market?

Can you tell me if this bus goes to Ben Thanh Market?

    Pergunta de sim/não → if/whether + frase afirmativa.

  • Do you know how old is your grandfather?

Do you know how old your grandfather is?

How old + sujeito + be.

  • Could you tell me where did you buy that jacket?

Could you tell me where you bought that jacket?

Tire o did e coloque o verbo principal no passado.

  • I don't know where she's going?

    I don't know where she's going.

Exemplos

  • Excuse me, do you know where the bus stop is?
  • I wonder why he was so angry yesterday.
  • Do you know where your sister works?
  • Could you tell me how much this bag costs?
