คำถามทางอ้อม

คำถามทางอ้อมคือคำถามที่อยู่ข้างในอีกประโยคหนึ่ง (Do you know…?, Could you tell me…?, I wonder…) คำถามที่อยู่ข้างในใช้ลำดับคำแบบประโยคบอกเล่า: คำแสดงคำถาม + ประธาน + กริยา และ do / does / did หายไป

💡เมื่อ does / did หายไป Tense ของมันจะย้ายไปอยู่ที่กริยาหลัก: What time does it open? → … what time it opens. Why did she leave? → … why she left.

1. ถามอย่างสุภาพ โดยเฉพาะกับคนแปลกหน้า ลูกค้า หรือหัวหน้า — นุ่มนวลกว่าถามตรง ๆ

• Excuse me, do you know where the nearest ATM is?

  ขอโทษนะคะ ทราบไหมคะว่าตู้ ATM ที่ใกล้ที่สุดอยู่ที่ไหน

• Could you tell me how far it is to the airport?

  ช่วยบอกได้ไหมว่าไปสนามบินไกลแค่ไหน

• Would you mind telling me what you think of the plan?

  ช่วยบอกได้ไหมว่าคุณคิดอย่างไรกับแผนนี้

2. บอกว่าคุณสงสัยหรือไม่รู้อะไร — ประโยคพวกนี้เป็นประโยคบอกเล่า จึงลงท้ายด้วยจุด

• I wonder what she wants for her birthday.

  ฉันสงสัยว่าเธออยากได้อะไรเป็นของขวัญวันเกิด

• I have no idea where he went last night.

  ฉันไม่รู้เลยว่าเมื่อคืนเขาไปไหนมา

• I can't remember where I parked the car.

  ฉันจำไม่ได้ว่าจอดรถไว้ตรงไหน

• ขึ้นต้นแบบคำถาม (?): Do you know…? / Could you tell me…? / Can you tell me…? / Do you have any idea…? / Would you mind telling me…? / Can you remember…?
• ขึ้นต้นแบบบอกเล่า (.): I wonder… / I don't know… / I'm not sure… / I have no idea… / I'd like to know… / I can't remember…
• เครื่องหมายท้ายประโยคเป็นไปตามประโยคข้างนอก ไม่ใช่คำถามที่อยู่ข้างใน

คำถาม Yes/No ไม่มีคำแสดงคำถาม จึงต้องเติม if หรือ whether ความหมายเหมือนกัน whether เป็นทางการกว่านิดหน่อย และมักใช้คู่กับ or not

• Do you know if the restaurant is open today?

  คุณรู้ไหมว่าวันนี้ร้านอาหารเปิดหรือเปล่า

• I'm not sure whether it will rain or not.

  ฉันไม่แน่ใจว่าฝนจะตกหรือไม่

• It depends on whether we have enough time.

  ขึ้นอยู่กับว่าเรามีเวลาพอหรือเปล่า (หลังคำบุพบทใช้ได้แค่ whether)

• I can't decide whether to buy it.

  ฉันตัดสินใจไม่ได้ว่าจะซื้อดีไหม (หน้า to + กริยาใช้ได้แค่ whether)

ถ้า who / what / which เป็นประธาน คำถามตรงก็มีลำดับคำแบบบอกเล่าอยู่แล้ว (ไม่มี do/did) ในคำถามทางอ้อมจึงไม่ต้องเปลี่ยนอะไรเลย ดูเพิ่มเติมที่บทเรียน “คำถามถามประธานและถามกรรม”

• Who broke the window? → Do you know who broke the window?

  ใครทำหน้าต่างแตก → คุณรู้ไหมว่าใครทำหน้าต่างแตก

• What happened? → Can you tell me what happened?

  เกิดอะไรขึ้น → ช่วยบอกฉันได้ไหมว่าเกิดอะไรขึ้น

แต่ถ้าเป็น be + คำนาม ให้ย้าย be ไปไว้ท้าย: Who is that man? → Do you know who that man is? (ไม่ใช่: who is that man)

💡คำถามทางอ้อมไม่ถอย Tense เพราะคุณกำลังถามอยู่ตอนนี้: Do you know where she lives? จะถอย Tense ก็ต่อเมื่อเล่าคำถามของคนอื่น: She asked me where I lived — ดูบทเรียน “ประโยคเล่าความ (reported speech)”

• ✗Do you know where is the post office?

  ✓Do you know where the post office is?

  คำถามที่อยู่ข้างในใช้ลำดับแบบบอกเล่า: ประธาน + กริยา

• ✗I wonder what does she want for her birthday.

  ✓I wonder what she wants for her birthday.

  ตัด does ออกแล้วเติม -s ที่กริยาหลัก

• ✗Can you tell me does this bus go to Ben Thanh Market?

  ✓Can you tell me if this bus goes to Ben Thanh Market?

  คำถาม Yes/No → if/whether + ประโยคบอกเล่า

• ✗Do you know how old is your grandfather?

  ✓Do you know how old your grandfather is?

  How old + ประธาน + be

• ✗Could you tell me where did you buy that jacket?

  ✓Could you tell me where you bought that jacket?

  ตัด did ออกแล้วใช้กริยาหลักรูปอดีต

• ✗I don't know where she's going?

  ✓I don't know where she's going.

  ประโยคข้างนอกเป็นประโยคบอกเล่า จึงลงท้ายด้วยจุด
