Le domande indirette
IntermedioIndirect questions
Forma e uso
Do you know where … is? I wonder what … — una domanda dentro una frase mantiene l'ordine affermativo
1.Forma
Una domanda indiretta è una domanda dentro un'altra frase (Do you know…?, Could you tell me…?, I wonder…). La domanda interna usa l'ordine della frase affermativa: parola interrogativa + soggetto + verbo, e do / does / did spariscono.
| Domanda diretta | Domanda indiretta |
|---|---|
| Where is the bus stop? | Do you know where the bus stop is? |
| How much is this bag? | Could you tell me how much this bag is? |
| What time does the bank open? | Do you know what time the bank opens? |
| Why did she leave early? | I wonder why she left early. |
| Is the shop open on Sundays? | Do you know if the shop is open on Sundays? |
| Does this bus go to the airport? | Can you tell me whether this bus goes to the airport? |
Quando does / did spariscono, il loro tempo passa al verbo principale: What time does it open? → … what time it opens. Why did she leave? → … why she left.
2.Quando si usa
Excuse me, do you know where the nearest ATM is?
Could you tell me how far it is to the airport?
Potrebbe dirmi quanto dista l'aeroporto?
Would you mind telling me what you think of the plan?
Ti dispiacerebbe dirmi cosa pensi del progetto?
I wonder what she wants for her birthday.
I have no idea where he went last night.
I can't remember where I parked the car.
- Inizi che sono domande (?): Do you know…? / Could you tell me…? / Can you tell me…? / Do you have any idea…? / Would you mind telling me…? / Can you remember…?
- Inizi che sono affermazioni (.): I wonder… / I don't know… / I'm not sure… / I have no idea… / I'd like to know… / I can't remember…
3.Domande sì/no: if / whether
Una domanda sì/no non ha una parola interrogativa, quindi aggiungi if o whether. Hanno lo stesso significato; whether è un po' più formale e va spesso con or not.
Do you know if the restaurant is open today?
Sai se il ristorante è aperto oggi?
I'm not sure whether it will rain or not.
Non sono sicuro se pioverà o no.
It depends on whether we have enough time.
Dipende dal fatto che abbiamo abbastanza tempo o no. (dopo una preposizione, solo whether)
I can't decide whether to buy it.
Non riesco a decidere se comprarlo. (prima di to + verbo, solo whether)
Who broke the window? → Do you know who broke the window?
Chi ha rotto la finestra? → Sai chi ha rotto la finestra?
What happened? → Can you tell me what happened?
Che cosa è successo? → Mi puoi dire che cosa è successo?
Ma con be + sostantivo, be va alla fine: Who is that man? → Do you know who that man is? (non: who is that man).
Le domande indirette non spostano il tempo indietro, perché stai chiedendo adesso: Do you know where she lives? Si sposta indietro solo quando riferisci la domanda di qualcun altro: She asked me where I lived — vedi la lezione “Il discorso indiretto”.
5.Errori comuni
Do you know where is the post office?Do you know where the post office is?
I wonder what does she want for her birthday.I wonder what she wants for her birthday.
Togli does e aggiungi -s al verbo principale.
Can you tell me does this bus go to Ben Thanh Market? Can you tell me if this bus goes to Ben Thanh Market?
Domanda sì/no → if/whether + frase affermativa.
Do you know how old is your grandfather?Do you know how old your grandfather is?
How old + soggetto + be.
Could you tell me where did you buy that jacket?Could you tell me where you bought that jacket?
I don't know where she's going?I don't know where she's going.
Esempi
- Excuse me, do you know where the bus stop is?
