Lezione 65 · Tappa 5: Passivo, discorso indiretto e domande
Il discorso indiretto
IntermedioReported speech
Forma e uso
said / told qualcuno (that) + frase, asked if — riferire ciò che qualcuno ha detto
1.Discorso diretto e discorso indiretto
Il discorso indiretto riferisce il senso senza virgolette: said / told + (that) + frase. Puoi omettere that, soprattutto nel parlato.
“I'm tired,” Minh said. → Minh said (that) he was tired.
“Sono stanco”, ha detto Minh. → Minh ha detto che era stanco.
“I've lost my keys,” Lan told me. → Lan told me she had lost her keys.
“Ho perso le chiavi”, mi ha detto Lan. → Lan mi ha detto che aveva perso le chiavi.
2.Spostare il tempo verbale indietro
Quando il verbo che introduce il discorso è al passato (said, told, asked), il verbo della frase riferita di solito fa un passo indietro nel passato.
| Diretto → indiretto | Parole dette | Discorso indiretto |
|---|---|---|
| present simple → past simple | “I live in Hue.” | She said she lived in Hue. |
| present continuous → past continuous | “I'm cooking dinner.” | He said he was cooking dinner. |
| present perfect → past perfect | “I've seen the film.” | He said he had seen the film. |
| past simple → past perfect (o nessun cambiamento) | “I bought it online.” | She said she had bought it online. / She said she bought it online. |
| will → would | “I'll call you.” | He said he would call me. |
| can → could | “I can help.” | She said she could help. |
| must → had to (o si mantiene must) | “I must leave before ten.” | She said she had to leave before ten. |
| am/is/are going to → was/were going to | “I'm going to visit my grandparents.” | He said he was going to visit his grandparents. |
| may → might | “It may rain.” | They said it might rain. |
Would, could, should, might, ought to e il past perfect restano invariati.
Dopo said / told, chiediti quando sono state dette quelle parole. Se è stato nel passato e la situazione è finita, sposta il tempo indietro, come in italiano “ha detto che era stanco”: Minh said he was tired (non: is tired).
3.Quando non serve spostare il tempo indietro
1. Il verbo introduttivo è al presente (says, tells, has said): spesso quando riferisci subito un messaggio, o dici quello che qualcuno dice sempre
My brother says he lost his wallet on the bus this morning.
The weather forecast says it's going to rain all weekend.
2. È ancora vero adesso: puoi spostare il tempo indietro oppure lasciarlo com'è
Lan said she lives in Da Nang. / Lan said she lived in Da Nang.
The receptionist told us that the pool closes at nine.
You said you didn't like durian, but you've eaten three pieces!
(non: you don't like)
|---|---|
| today / tonight | that day / that night |
| tomorrow | the next day / the following day |
| yesterday | the day before / the previous day |
| next week | the following week / the week after |
| last week | the week before / the previous week |
| … ago | … before / … earlier |
| now | then / at that time |
| here / this | there / that |
Last week Nam said, “I'll call you tomorrow.” → Last week Nam said he would call me the next day.
5.Say o tell
- tell + persona (bisogna dire chi ha ascoltato): She told me (that) she was busy. Non “told that…” né “told to me”.
- say + (that) + frase, senza l'ascoltatore subito dopo: She said (that) she was busy. Per nominare l'ascoltatore, usa say to + persona: He said to me that… (meno comune di told me).
- Espressioni fisse: tell the truth / a lie / a story / a joke / the time; say hello / goodbye / sorry / something / no.
- Altri verbi per riferire: explain (to sb) that, promise (that), warn sb that, admit that, complain that, agree that.
The waiter told us that the kitchen was closed.
She promised she would never be late again.
The guide warned us that the path was slippery.
6.Riferire domande e richieste
Una domanda riferita diventa una frase affermativa: il soggetto va prima del verbo, do / does / did spariscono, non c'è il punto interrogativo e il tempo si sposta comunque indietro.
- Domande con wh-: asked (+ persona) + parola interrogativa + soggetto + verbo.
- Domande sì/no: asked (+ persona) + if / whether + soggetto + verbo.
- Richieste e ordini: asked / told + persona + (not) to + verbo — vedi la lezione “Verbo + persona + to-infinito”.
“Where do you live?” → She asked me where I lived.
“Dove abiti?” → Mi ha chiesto dove abitavo.
“Where did you buy this jacket?” → My friend asked me where I had bought that jacket.
“Dove hai comprato questa giacca?” → Il mio amico mi ha chiesto dove avevo comprato quella giacca.
“Are you cooking?” → Mai asked if I was cooking.
“Stai cucinando?” → Mai mi ha chiesto se stavo cucinando.
“Please wait here.” → The nurse asked us to wait there.
“Aspettate qui, per favore.” → L'infermiera ci ha chiesto di aspettare lì.
“Don't touch it!” → He told me not to touch it.
“Non toccarlo!” → Mi ha detto di non toccarlo.
Anche le domande cortesi come Do you know where… is? usano l'ordine della frase affermativa, ma senza spostare il tempo indietro: vedi la lezione “Le domande indirette”.
7.Errori comuni
She said me she was hungry. She told me she was hungry.
She told that she was busy. She said that she was busy.
tell vuole sempre un ascoltatore: told me / told him.
The waiter told to us that the kitchen was closed. The waiter told us that the kitchen was closed.
tell + persona, senza to.
He asked me where was the bus station. He asked me where the bus station was.
Nam asked me did I want to join his team.Nam asked me if I wanted to join his team.
Domanda sì/no → if/whether, senza did.
My boss said he will give me a day off, but he forgot. My boss said he would give me a day off, but he forgot.
La promessa è nel passato e non è stata mantenuta → will diventa would.
