Dolaylı sorular

Dolaylı soru, başka bir cümlenin içindeki sorudur (Do you know…?, Could you tell me…?, I wonder…). İçerideki soru düz cümle sırasıyla kurulur: soru kelimesi + özne + fiil, ve do / does / did kaybolur.

💡does / did kaybolunca taşıdıkları zaman asıl fiile geçer: What time does it open? → … what time it opens. Why did she leave? → … why she left.

1. Kibarca sormak, özellikle yabancılara, müşterilere ya da patronuna — doğrudan sorudan daha yumuşaktır

• Excuse me, do you know where the nearest ATM is?

  Affedersiniz, en yakın ATM'nin nerede olduğunu biliyor musunuz?

• Could you tell me how far it is to the airport?

  Havalimanının ne kadar uzakta olduğunu söyleyebilir misiniz?

• Would you mind telling me what you think of the plan?

  Plan hakkında ne düşündüğünüzü söyler misiniz?

2. Merak ettiğin ya da bilmediğin bir şeyi söylemek — bunlar düz cümledir, bu yüzden nokta ile biter

• I wonder what she wants for her birthday.

  Doğum günü için ne istediğini merak ediyorum.

• I have no idea where he went last night.

  Dün gece nereye gittiği hakkında hiçbir fikrim yok.

• I can't remember where I parked the car.

  Arabayı nereye park ettiğimi hatırlayamıyorum.

• Soru olan girişler (?): Do you know…? / Could you tell me…? / Can you tell me…? / Do you have any idea…? / Would you mind telling me…? / Can you remember…?
• Düz cümle olan girişler (.): I wonder… / I don't know… / I'm not sure… / I have no idea… / I'd like to know… / I can't remember…
• Sondaki noktalama işaretini içerideki soru değil, dıştaki cümle belirler.

Evet/hayır sorusunda soru kelimesi yoktur, bu yüzden if ya da whether ekle. Anlamları aynıdır; whether biraz daha resmîdir ve çoğu zaman or not ile birlikte gelir.

• Do you know if the restaurant is open today?

  Restoranın bugün açık olup olmadığını biliyor musun?

• I'm not sure whether it will rain or not.

  Yağmur yağıp yağmayacağından emin değilim.

• It depends on whether we have enough time.

  Yeterli vaktimizin olup olmamasına bağlı. (edattan sonra sadece whether)

• I can't decide whether to buy it.

  Onu alıp almamaya karar veremiyorum. (to + fiilden önce sadece whether)

who / what / which özneyse doğrudan soru zaten düz cümle sırasındadır (do/did yok), bu yüzden dolaylı soruda hiçbir şey değişmez. “Özne ve nesne soruları” dersine de bak.

• Who broke the window? → Do you know who broke the window?

  Camı kim kırdı? → Camı kimin kırdığını biliyor musun?

• What happened? → Can you tell me what happened?

  Ne oldu? → Ne olduğunu anlatabilir misin?

Ama be + isim olduğunda be sona gider: Who is that man? → Do you know who that man is? (who is that man değil).

💡Dolaylı sorularda zaman geri kaymaz, çünkü şu anda soruyorsun: Do you know where she lives? Zamanı sadece başkasının sorusunu aktarırken geri kaydırırsın: She asked me where I lived — “Dolaylı anlatım” dersine bak.

• ✗Do you know where is the post office?

  ✓Do you know where the post office is?

  İçerideki soru düz cümle sırasıyla kurulur: özne + fiil.

• ✗I wonder what does she want for her birthday.

  ✓I wonder what she wants for her birthday.

  does'u at ve asıl fiile -s ekle.

• ✗Can you tell me does this bus go to Ben Thanh Market?

  ✓Can you tell me if this bus goes to Ben Thanh Market?

  Evet/hayır sorusu → if/whether + düz cümle.

• ✗Do you know how old is your grandfather?

  ✓Do you know how old your grandfather is?

  How old + özne + be.

• ✗Could you tell me where did you buy that jacket?

  ✓Could you tell me where you bought that jacket?

  did'i at ve asıl fiili geçmiş zamana koy.

• ✗I don't know where she's going?

  ✓I don't know where she's going.

  Dıştaki cümle düz cümledir, bu yüzden nokta ile biter.
