Do you know where … is? I wonder what … — वाक्य के अंदर का प्रश्न कथन वाला शब्द-क्रम रखता है

1.रूप (Form)

अप्रत्यक्ष प्रश्न वह प्रश्न है जो किसी दूसरे वाक्य के अंदर होता है (Do you know…?, Could you tell me…?, I wonder…)। अंदर वाले प्रश्न में सामान्य वाक्य का शब्द-क्रम आता है: प्रश्नवाचक शब्द + कर्ता + क्रिया, और do / does / did हट जाते हैं।

Does this bus go to the airport?	Can you tell me whether this bus goes to the airport?

जब does / did हटते हैं, तो उनका tense मुख्य क्रिया पर आ जाता है: What time does it open? → … what time it opens. Why did she leave? → … why she left.

2.इसका प्रयोग कब करें

1. विनम्रता से पूछना, खासकर अजनबियों, ग्राहकों या अपने बॉस से — सीधे प्रश्न से ज़्यादा नरम

Excuse me, do you know where the nearest ATM is?
माफ़ कीजिए, क्या आप जानते हैं कि सबसे पास का ATM कहाँ है?
Could you tell me how far it is to the airport?
क्या आप बता सकते हैं कि एयरपोर्ट कितनी दूर है?
Would you mind telling me what you think of the plan?
क्या आप बताना चाहेंगे कि इस योजना के बारे में आपकी क्या राय है?

2. यह बताना कि आप किस बारे में सोच रहे हैं या क्या नहीं जानते — ये सामान्य वाक्य हैं, इसलिए इनके अंत में पूर्ण विराम (full stop) आता है

I wonder what she wants for her birthday.
मैं सोच रहा हूँ कि उसे अपने जन्मदिन पर क्या चाहिए।
I have no idea where he went last night.
मुझे बिल्कुल अंदाज़ा नहीं कि वह कल रात कहाँ गया था।
I can't remember where I parked the car.
मुझे याद नहीं आ रहा कि मैंने गाड़ी कहाँ खड़ी की।

प्रश्न वाली शुरुआत (?): Do you know…? / Could you tell me…? / Can you tell me…? / Do you have any idea…? / Would you mind telling me…? / Can you remember…?
सामान्य वाक्य वाली शुरुआत (.): I wonder… / I don't know… / I'm not sure… / I have no idea… / I'd like to know… / I can't remember…
अंत का विराम चिह्न बाहर वाले वाक्य के हिसाब से लगता है, अंदर वाले प्रश्न के हिसाब से नहीं।

3.Yes/no प्रश्न: if / whether

Yes/no प्रश्न में कोई प्रश्नवाचक शब्द नहीं होता, इसलिए if या whether जोड़ें। दोनों का मतलब एक है; whether थोड़ा ज़्यादा औपचारिक है और अक्सर or not के साथ आता है।

Do you know if the restaurant is open today?
क्या आपको पता है कि रेस्टोरेंट आज खुला है या नहीं?
I'm not sure whether it will rain or not.
मुझे पक्का नहीं पता कि बारिश होगी या नहीं।
It depends on whether we have enough time.
यह इस पर निर्भर करता है कि हमारे पास पर्याप्त समय है या नहीं। (preposition के बाद सिर्फ़ whether)
I can't decide whether to buy it.
मैं तय नहीं कर पा रहा कि इसे ख़रीदूँ या नहीं। (to + क्रिया से पहले सिर्फ़ whether)

4.जब प्रश्नवाचक शब्द ही कर्ता हो

अगर who / what / which कर्ता है, तो प्रत्यक्ष प्रश्न में पहले से ही सामान्य वाक्य का शब्द-क्रम होता है (do/did नहीं), इसलिए अप्रत्यक्ष प्रश्न में कुछ नहीं बदलता। पाठ “कर्ता और कर्म के बारे में प्रश्न” भी देखें।

Who broke the window? → Do you know who broke the window?
खिड़की किसने तोड़ी? → क्या आप जानते हैं कि खिड़की किसने तोड़ी?
What happened? → Can you tell me what happened?
क्या हुआ? → क्या आप बता सकते हैं कि क्या हुआ?

लेकिन be + संज्ञा के साथ be अंत में चला जाता है: Who is that man? → Do you know who that man is? (who is that man नहीं)।

अप्रत्यक्ष प्रश्नों में tense पीछे नहीं जाता, क्योंकि आप अभी पूछ रहे हैं: Do you know where she lives? Tense सिर्फ़ तब पीछे जाता है जब आप किसी और का प्रश्न रिपोर्ट करते हैं: She asked me where I lived — पाठ “अप्रत्यक्ष कथन” देखें।

5.आम गलतियाँ

~~Do you know where is the post office?~~
Do you know where the post office is?
अंदर वाले प्रश्न में सामान्य वाक्य का क्रम आता है: कर्ता + क्रिया।
~~I wonder what does she want for her birthday.~~
I wonder what she wants for her birthday.
does हटाएँ और मुख्य क्रिया में -s जोड़ें।
~~Can you tell me does this bus go to Ben Thanh Market?~~
Can you tell me if this bus goes to Ben Thanh Market?
Yes/no प्रश्न → if/whether + सामान्य वाक्य।
~~Do you know how old is your grandfather?~~
Do you know how old your grandfather is?
How old + कर्ता + be।
~~Could you tell me where did you buy that jacket?~~
Could you tell me where you bought that jacket?
did हटाएँ और मुख्य क्रिया को Past में रखें।
~~I don't know where she's going?~~
I don't know where she's going.
बाहर वाला वाक्य सामान्य वाक्य है, इसलिए अंत में पूर्ण विराम आता है।
