Wann the (und wann nicht)
MittelstufeWhen to use the (and when not to)
Form & Gebrauch
children vs the children, school vs the school, the old, play the guitar — allgemein vs. bestimmt
| Allgemein — ohne the | Bestimmt — mit the |
|---|---|
| Children need a lot of sleep. | The children are asleep upstairs. |
| I can't work without music. | I don't like the music in this café. |
| Sugar is bad for your teeth. | Could you pass the sugar, please? |
| Dogs are friendly animals. | The dogs next door bark all night. |
| Rice is cheap here. | The rice we bought yesterday is very good. |
I like working with people who are honest.
I really like the people I work with.
Do you like strong black coffee?
Magst du starken schwarzen Kaffee? (immer noch allgemein)
The coffee we had this morning was too sweet.
- most + Nomen für eine allgemeine Aussage: Most people like holidays. (nicht: The most people — auch wenn man auf Deutsch „die meisten Leute“ sagt)
- all + Nomen = alle ganz allgemein; all the + Nomen = alle aus einer bestimmten Gruppe: All plants need water. / All the plants in my garden died.
Frag dich: „Weiß mein Gegenüber, welche genau?“ Wenn du „alle Dinge dieser Art“ meinst, steht kein Artikel: I'm afraid of dogs (Hunde allgemein), nicht the dogs. Achtung: Wo das Deutsche bei allgemeinen Begriffen oft den Artikel benutzt („Das Leben ist kurz“, „die Natur“), steht im Englischen keiner: Life is short, nature.
2.Einzigartiges und feste Wendungen
Nimm the, wenn es etwas nur einmal gibt (auf der Welt oder in der Situation), und vor Superlativen, Ordnungszahlen und the same.
- Nur einmal vorhanden: the sun, the moon, the sky, the sea, the world, the internet, the environment
- Superlative: the best, the tallest, the most expensive
- Ordnungszahlen und next / last: the first time, the fifth floor, the next train, the last day
- the same (nicht: same): We have the same phone.
- Ein Teil von etwas: the end of the month, the top of the page, the beginning of the film
The sky was clear and the sea was calm.
This is the best pho I've ever had.
Our office is on the fifth floor.
Unser Büro ist im fünften Stock.
Lan and I were born on the same day.
Would you like to travel into space?
Würdest du gern in den Weltraum reisen? (nicht: the space)
Our flight leaves from gate 5.
Unser Flug geht von Gate 5. (nicht: the gate 5)
3.school oder the school?
| Ohne the — eigentlicher Zweck | the — das Gebäude | |
|---|---|---|
| school | Hoa goes to school by bike. | Her mum went to the school to meet the teacher. |
| university | Minh wants to go to university. | The university is next to a park. |
| hospital | Grandpa is in hospital. | We went to the hospital to visit him. |
| prison | The thief was sent to prison. | A journalist visited the prison. |
| church | They go to church on Sundays. | The church was built in 1890. |
- go to bed / be in bed (zum Schlafen oder Ausruhen) — aber sit on the bed (ein bestimmtes Möbelstück)
- go to work / be at work / start work / finish work
- go home / come home / get home / be at home — kein to vor home
I'm tired. I'm going to bed.
Ich bin müde. Ich gehe ins Bett.
Don't put your bag on the bed.
Leg deine Tasche nicht aufs Bett. (ein bestimmtes Bett)
Dad is still at work.
Papa ist noch bei der Arbeit.
What time did you get home?
Wann bist du nach Hause gekommen? (nicht: get to home)
4.Mahlzeiten, Instrumente, Sport, Fernsehen
| Übliche Form | Hinweis | |
|---|---|---|
| Mahlzeiten | have breakfast / lunch / dinner | mit Adjektiv kommt a dazu: a quick lunch, a big dinner |
| Instrumente | play the guitar / the piano / the drums | im amerikanischen Englisch ist auch play guitar, play piano üblich |
| Sport | play football / tennis / badminton | ohne the |
| Fernsehen und Radio | watch TV / listen to the radio | aber turn off the TV (das Gerät) |
| Ausgehen | go to the cinema / the theatre | mit the, auch wenn du kein bestimmtes meinst |
What did you have for breakfast?
Was hast du zum Frühstück gegessen?

(Adjektiv → a)

5.the old, the French, the tiger
The + Adjektiv (ohne Nomen) bedeutet eine ganze Gruppe von Menschen: the rich, the poor, the young, the elderly, the homeless, the unemployed, the sick, the injured.
The elderly often need help with new technology.
Ältere Menschen brauchen oft Hilfe mit neuer Technik. (need, nicht: needs)
Should the rich pay more tax?
Sollten die Reichen mehr Steuern zahlen?
Für eine Person brauchst du ein Nomen: a rich man, an elderly woman, a homeless person (nicht: a rich).
Nationalitäten auf -ch, -sh, -ese, -ss bekommen the, wenn das ganze Volk gemeint ist: the French, the British, the Dutch, the Spanish, the Chinese, the Japanese, the Vietnamese, the Swiss. Andere Nationalitäten bekommen ein -s und meist kein the: Americans, Italians, Koreans, Thais. Bei jeder Nationalität geht auch … people: Vietnamese people, French people.
The Dutch are famous for their bicycles.
Die Niederländer sind für ihre Fahrräder bekannt.
The tiger is in danger of dying out.
Der Tiger ist vom Aussterben bedroht.
Who invented the telephone?
Wer hat das Telefon erfunden?
Für eine Person ist a Chinese man / a Swiss woman / a Vietnamese person am natürlichsten. „A Chinese“ ist grammatisch richtig, kann aber schroff klingen; im Plural ist Chinese people am sichersten.
6.Typische Fehler
