Quando usare the (e quando no)
IntermedioWhen to use the (and when not to)
Forma e uso
children vs the children, school vs the school, the old, play the guitar — generale o specifico
1.In generale o specifico?
Quando chi ascolta sa esattamente quali intendi, usa the.
| In generale — senza the | Specifico — con the |
|---|---|
| Children need a lot of sleep. | The children are asleep upstairs. |
| I can't work without music. | I don't like the music in this café. |
| Sugar is bad for your teeth. | Could you pass the sugar, please? |
| Dogs are friendly animals. | The dogs next door bark all night. |
| Rice is cheap here. | The rice we bought yesterday is very good. |
I like working with people who are honest.
Mi piace lavorare con persone oneste. (ancora generale: un tipo di persona)
I really like the people I work with.
Do you like strong black coffee?
Ti piace il caffè nero forte? (ancora generale)
The coffee we had this morning was too sweet.
- most + sostantivo per un'affermazione generale: Most people like holidays. (non: The most people)
- all + sostantivo = tutti, in generale; all the + sostantivo = tutti quelli di un gruppo specifico: All plants need water. / All the plants in my garden died.
Chiediti: “Chi ascolta sa quali?” Se intendi “tutte le cose di quel tipo”, non usare l'articolo: I'm afraid of dogs (i cani in generale), non the dogs. Attenzione: in italiano usiamo l'articolo anche quando parliamo in generale (“Lo zucchero fa male ai denti”), in inglese no: Sugar is bad for your teeth.
2.Cose uniche ed espressioni fisse
Usa the quando esiste una sola cosa di quel tipo (nel mondo o nella situazione), e davanti ai superlativi, ai numeri ordinali e a the same.
- Ce n'è uno solo: the sun, the moon, the sky, the sea, the world, the internet, the environment
- Superlativi: the best, the tallest, the most expensive
- Ordinali e next / last: the first time, the fifth floor, the next train, the last day
- the same (non: same): We have the same phone.
- Una parte di qualcosa: the end of the month, the top of the page, the beginning of the film
The sky was clear and the sea was calm.
Il cielo era sereno e il mare era calmo.
This is the best pho I've ever had.
Our office is on the fifth floor.
Il nostro ufficio è al quinto piano.
Lan and I were born on the same day.
Would you like to travel into space?
Ti piacerebbe viaggiare nello spazio? (non: the space)
Our flight leaves from gate 5.
Il nostro volo parte dal gate 5. (non: the gate 5)
3.school o the school?
| Senza the — funzione principale | the — l'edificio | |
|---|---|---|
| school | Hoa goes to school by bike. | Her mum went to the school to meet the teacher. |
| university | Minh wants to go to university. | The university is next to a park. |
| hospital | Grandpa is in hospital. | We went to the hospital to visit him. |
| prison | The thief was sent to prison. | A journalist visited the prison. |
| church | They go to church on Sundays. | The church was built in 1890. |
L'inglese americano è un po' diverso: gli americani di solito dicono in the hospital / to the hospital anche per i pazienti, e spesso usano college per qualsiasi studio universitario: She's in college.
Anche altre espressioni comuni non vogliono the:
- go to bed / be in bed (per dormire o riposare), ma sit on the bed (un mobile specifico)
- go to work / be at work / start work / finish work
- go home / come home / get home / be at home: niente to prima di home
I'm tired. I'm going to bed.
Sono stanco. Vado a letto.
Don't put your bag on the bed.
Non mettere la borsa sul letto. (un letto specifico)
Dad is still at work.
Papà è ancora al lavoro.
What time did you get home?
A che ora sei arrivato a casa? (non: get to home)
4.Pasti, strumenti, sport, TV
| Forma abituale | Nota | |
|---|---|---|
| Strumenti | play the guitar / the piano / the drums | nell'inglese americano è comune anche play guitar, play piano |
| Sport | play football / tennis / badminton | senza the |
| TV e radio | watch TV / listen to the radio | ma turn off the TV (l'apparecchio) |
| Uscire | go to the cinema / the theatre | the, anche quando non intendi un posto preciso |
What did you have for breakfast?
Che cosa hai mangiato a colazione?

5.the old, the French, the tiger
The + aggettivo (senza sostantivo) indica un intero gruppo di persone: the rich, the poor, the young, the elderly, the homeless, the unemployed, the sick, the injured.
The elderly often need help with new technology.
Should the rich pay more tax?
I ricchi dovrebbero pagare più tasse?
Per una persona sola, aggiungi un sostantivo: a rich man, an elderly woman, a homeless person (non: a rich).
Le nazionalità che finiscono in -ch, -sh, -ese, -ss vogliono the quando indicano l'intero popolo: the French, the British, the Dutch, the Spanish, the Chinese, the Japanese, the Vietnamese, the Swiss. Con tutte le nazionalità puoi dire … people: Vietnamese people, French people.
The Dutch are famous for their bicycles.
The tiger is in danger of dying out.
La tigre rischia l'estinzione.
Who invented the telephone?
6.Errori comuni
The money can't buy happiness.Money can't buy happiness.
