IntermédiaireWhen to use the (and when not to)
Forme et emploi
children vs the children, school vs the school, the old, play the guitar — général ou précis
Quand ton interlocuteur sait exactement lesquels tu veux dire, utilise the.
| En général — pas de the | Précis — avec the |
|---|---|
| Children need a lot of sleep. | The children are asleep upstairs. |
| I can't work without music. | I don't like the music in this café. |
| Sugar is bad for your teeth. | Could you pass the sugar, please? |
| Dogs are friendly animals. | The dogs next door bark all night. |
| Rice is cheap here. | The rice we bought yesterday is very good. |
I like working with people who are honest.
J'aime travailler avec des gens honnêtes. (toujours général : un type de personne)
I really like the people I work with.
Do you like strong black coffee?
Tu aimes le café noir bien fort ? (toujours général)
The coffee we had this morning was too sweet.
- most + nom pour une affirmation générale : Most people like holidays. (pas : The most people)
- all + nom = tous, en général ; all the + nom = tous ceux d'un groupe précis : All plants need water. / All the plants in my garden died.
- Chose unique : the sun, the moon, the sky, the sea, the world, the internet, the environment
- Superlatifs : the best, the tallest, the most expensive
- Ordinaux et next / last : the first time, the fifth floor, the next train, the last day
- the same (pas : same) : We have the same phone.
- Une partie de quelque chose : the end of the month, the top of the page, the beginning of the film
The sky was clear and the sea was calm.
This is the best pho I've ever had.
Our office is on the fifth floor.
Notre bureau est au cinquième étage.
Lan and I were born on the same day.
Would you like to travel into space?
Tu aimerais voyager dans l'espace ? (pas : the space)
Our flight leaves from gate 5.
Notre vol part de la porte 5. (pas : the gate 5)
3.school ou the school ?
| Sans the — fonction principale | the — le bâtiment | |
|---|---|---|
| school | Hoa goes to school by bike. | Her mum went to the school to meet the teacher. |
| university | Minh wants to go to university. | The university is next to a park. |
| hospital | Grandpa is in hospital. | We went to the hospital to visit him. |
| prison | The thief was sent to prison. | A journalist visited the prison. |
| church | They go to church on Sundays. | The church was built in 1890. |
- go to bed / be in bed (pour dormir ou se reposer) — mais sit on the bed (un meuble précis)
- go to work / be at work / start work / finish work
- go home / come home / get home / be at home — pas de to devant home
I'm tired. I'm going to bed.
Je suis fatigué. Je vais me coucher.
Don't put your bag on the bed.
Ne pose pas ton sac sur le lit. (un lit précis)
Dad is still at work.
Papa est encore au travail.
What time did you get home?
Tu es rentré à quelle heure ? (pas : get to home)
4.Repas, instruments, sports, télé
| Forme habituelle | Remarque | |
|---|---|---|
| Repas | have breakfast / lunch / dinner | avec un adjectif, ajoute a : a quick lunch, a big dinner |
| Instruments | play the guitar / the piano / the drums | en anglais américain, play guitar, play piano est aussi courant |
| Sports | play football / tennis / badminton | pas de the |
| Télé et radio | watch TV / listen to the radio | mais turn off the TV (l'appareil) |
| Sorties | go to the cinema / the theatre | the, même quand on ne pense pas à un lieu précis |

5.the old, the French, the tiger
The + adjectif (sans nom) désigne tout un groupe de personnes : the rich, the poor, the young, the elderly, the homeless, the unemployed, the sick, the injured.
The elderly often need help with new technology.
Should the rich pay more tax?
Les riches devraient-ils payer plus d'impôts ?
Pour une seule personne, ajoute un nom : a rich man, an elderly woman, a homeless person (pas : a rich).
Les noms de nationalité qui finissent par -ch, -sh, -ese, -ss prennent the pour désigner tout le peuple : the French, the British, the Dutch, the Spanish, the Chinese, the Japanese, the Vietnamese, the Swiss. Avec toutes les nationalités, tu peux dire … people : Vietnamese people, French people.
The Dutch are famous for their bicycles.
Les Néerlandais sont célèbres pour leurs vélos.
The tiger is in danger of dying out.
Le tigre est menacé d'extinction.
Who invented the telephone?
