Lição 80 · Etapa 7: Substantivos, artigos e determinantes
Quando usar the (e quando não)
IntermédioWhen to use the (and when not to)
Forma e uso
children vs the children, school vs the school, the old, play the guitar — geral ou específico
Quando o ouvinte sabe exatamente quais você quer dizer, use the.
| Em geral — sem the | Específico — com the |
|---|---|
| Children need a lot of sleep. | The children are asleep upstairs. |
| I can't work without music. | I don't like the music in this café. |
| Sugar is bad for your teeth. | Could you pass the sugar, please? |
| Dogs are friendly animals. | The dogs next door bark all night. |
| Rice is cheap here. | The rice we bought yesterday is very good. |
I like working with people who are honest.
Gosto de trabalhar com pessoas honestas. (ainda é geral — um tipo de pessoa)
I really like the people I work with.
Gosto muito das pessoas com quem trabalho. (um grupo específico)
Do you like strong black coffee?
Você gosta de café preto forte? (ainda é geral)
The coffee we had this morning was too sweet.
- most + substantivo para uma afirmação geral: Most people like holidays. (não: The most people)
- all + substantivo = todos, em geral; all the + substantivo = todos de um grupo específico: All plants need water. / All the plants in my garden died.
Pergunte a si mesmo: “O ouvinte sabe quais?” Se você quer dizer “todas as coisas desse tipo”, não use artigo: I'm afraid of dogs (cachorros em geral), e não the dogs. Atenção: em português usamos o artigo até para falar em geral (“O açúcar faz mal aos dentes”), mas em inglês não: Sugar is bad for your teeth.
2.Coisas únicas e expressões fixas
Use the quando só existe uma coisa daquele tipo (no mundo ou na situação), e antes de superlativos, numerais ordinais e the same.
- Só existe um: the sun, the moon, the sky, the sea, the world, the internet, the environment
- Superlativos: the best, the tallest, the most expensive
- Ordinais e next / last: the first time, the fifth floor, the next train, the last day
- the same (não: same): We have the same phone.
- Uma parte de algo: the end of the month, the top of the page, the beginning of the film
The sky was clear and the sea was calm.
O céu estava limpo e o mar estava calmo.
This is the best pho I've ever had.
Este é o melhor pho que eu já comi.
Our office is on the fifth floor.
Nosso escritório fica no quinto andar.
Lan and I were born on the same day.
Would you like to travel into space?
Você gostaria de viajar para o espaço? (não: the space)
Our flight leaves from gate 5.
Nosso voo sai do portão 5. (não: the gate 5)
3.school ou the school?
| Sem the — função principal | the — o prédio | |
|---|---|---|
| school | Hoa goes to school by bike. | Her mum went to the school to meet the teacher. |
| university | Minh wants to go to university. | The university is next to a park. |
| hospital | Grandpa is in hospital. | We went to the hospital to visit him. |
| prison | The thief was sent to prison. | A journalist visited the prison. |
| church | They go to church on Sundays. | The church was built in 1890. |
O inglês americano é um pouco diferente: os americanos geralmente dizem in the hospital / to the hospital mesmo para pacientes, e costumam usar college para qualquer curso superior: She's in college.
Algumas outras expressões comuns também ficam sem the:
- go to bed / be in bed (para dormir ou descansar) — mas sit on the bed (um móvel específico)
- go to work / be at work / start work / finish work
- go home / come home / get home / be at home — sem to antes de home
I'm tired. I'm going to bed.
Estou cansado. Vou dormir.
Don't put your bag on the bed.
Dad is still at work.
O papai ainda está no trabalho.
What time did you get home?
Que horas você chegou em casa? (não: get to home)
4.Refeições, instrumentos, esportes, TV
| Forma usual | Observação | |
|---|---|---|
| Refeições | have breakfast / lunch / dinner | com adjetivo, acrescente a: a quick lunch, a big dinner |
| Instrumentos | play the guitar / the piano / the drums | no inglês americano, play guitar, play piano também é comum |
| Esportes | play football / tennis / badminton | sem the |
| TV e rádio | watch TV / listen to the radio | mas turn off the TV (o aparelho) |
| Sair | go to the cinema / the theatre | the, mesmo quando você não se refere a um lugar específico |

5.the old, the French, the tiger
The + adjetivo (sem substantivo) significa um grupo inteiro de pessoas: the rich, the poor, the young, the elderly, the homeless, the unemployed, the sick, the injured. O sentido é plural, então o verbo fica no plural, e o adjetivo nunca leva -s.
The elderly often need help with new technology.
Should the rich pay more tax?
Os ricos deveriam pagar mais impostos?
Para uma pessoa, acrescente um substantivo: a rich man, an elderly woman, a homeless person (não: a rich).
As nacionalidades terminadas em -ch, -sh, -ese, -ss levam the quando se referem ao povo todo: the French, the British, the Dutch, the Spanish, the Chinese, the Japanese, the Vietnamese, the Swiss. As outras nacionalidades acrescentam -s e geralmente não levam the: Americans, Italians, Koreans, Thais. Com qualquer nacionalidade você pode dizer … people: Vietnamese people, French people.
The Dutch are famous for their bicycles.
Os holandeses são famosos por suas bicicletas.
The tiger is in danger of dying out.
O tigre corre risco de extinção.
Who invented the telephone?
Quem inventou o telefone?
6.Erros comuns
