Wanneer je the gebruikt (en wanneer niet)
GemiddeldWhen to use the (and when not to)
Vorm & gebruik
children vs the children, school vs the school, the old, play the guitar — algemeen vs specifiek
1.Algemeen of specifiek?
|---|---|
| Children need a lot of sleep. | The children are asleep upstairs. |
| I can't work without music. | I don't like the music in this café. |
| Sugar is bad for your teeth. | Could you pass the sugar, please? |
| Dogs are friendly animals. | The dogs next door bark all night. |
| Rice is cheap here. | The rice we bought yesterday is very good. |
I like working with people who are honest.
I really like the people I work with.
Do you like strong black coffee?
Hou je van sterke zwarte koffie? (nog steeds algemeen)
The coffee we had this morning was too sweet.
(bepaalde koffie)
- most + zelfstandig naamwoord voor een algemene uitspraak: Most people like holidays. (niet: The most people — ook al zeg je in het Nederlands “de meeste mensen”)
- all + zelfstandig naamwoord = allemaal in het algemeen; all the + zelfstandig naamwoord = allemaal uit een bepaalde groep: All plants need water. / All the plants in my garden died.
- Maar één: the sun, the moon, the sky, the sea, the world, the internet, the environment
- Overtreffende trap: the best, the tallest, the most expensive
- Rangtelwoorden en next / last: the first time, the fifth floor, the next train, the last day
- the same (niet: same): We have the same phone.
- Een deel van iets: the end of the month, the top of the page, the beginning of the film
The sky was clear and the sea was calm.

Our office is on the fifth floor.

Would you like to travel into space?
Zou je de ruimte in willen reizen? (niet: the space)
Our flight leaves from gate 5.
Onze vlucht vertrekt vanaf gate 5. (niet: the gate 5)
3.school of the school?
| Geen the — hoofddoel | the — het gebouw | |
|---|---|---|
| school | Hoa goes to school by bike. | Her mum went to the school to meet the teacher. |
| university | Minh wants to go to university. | The university is next to a park. |
| hospital | Grandpa is in hospital. | We went to the hospital to visit him. |
| prison | The thief was sent to prison. | A journalist visited the prison. |
| church | They go to church on Sundays. | The church was built in 1890. |
- go to work / be at work / start work / finish work
- go home / come home / get home / be at home — geen to vóór home
I'm tired. I'm going to bed.
Ik ben moe. Ik ga naar bed.

Leg je tas niet op het bed. (een bepaald bed)

Hoe laat was je thuis? (niet: get to home)
4.Maaltijden, instrumenten, sport, tv
| Gebruikelijke vorm | Opmerking | |
|---|---|---|
| Maaltijden | have breakfast / lunch / dinner | met een bijvoeglijk naamwoord komt er a bij: a quick lunch, a big dinner |
| Instrumenten | play the guitar / the piano / the drums | in Amerikaans Engels is play guitar, play piano ook gewoon |
| Sport | play football / tennis / badminton | geen the |
| Tv en radio | watch TV / listen to the radio | maar turn off the TV (het toestel) |
| Uitgaan | go to the cinema / the theatre | met the, ook als je geen bepaalde bedoelt |

5.the old, the French, the tiger
The + bijvoeglijk naamwoord (zonder zelfstandig naamwoord) betekent een hele groep mensen: the rich, the poor, the young, the elderly, the homeless, the unemployed, the sick, the injured.
The elderly often need help with new technology.
Should the rich pay more tax?
Moeten de rijken meer belasting betalen?
Voor één persoon voeg je een zelfstandig naamwoord toe: a rich man, an elderly woman, a homeless person (niet: a rich).
Nationaliteiten op -ch, -sh, -ese, -ss krijgen the als je het hele volk bedoelt: the French, the British, the Dutch, the Spanish, the Chinese, the Japanese, the Vietnamese, the Swiss. Bij elke nationaliteit kun je ook … people zeggen: Vietnamese people, French people.
The Dutch are famous for their bicycles.
Nederlanders staan bekend om hun fietsen.
The tiger is in danger of dying out.
De tijger dreigt uit te sterven.
Who invented the telephone?
Wie heeft de telefoon uitgevonden?
Voor één persoon is a Chinese man / a Swiss woman / a Vietnamese person het natuurlijkst. “A Chinese” is grammaticaal correct, maar kan bot klinken; in het meervoud is Chinese people het veiligst.
