“It is said that…” — סביל לדיווח

כשרוצים לדווח מה אנשים אומרים, מאמינים או חושבים מבלי לציין מי, באנגלית יש שני דפוסים: It + be + past participle + that + clause או subject + be + past participle + to-verb. דפוסים אלו נפוצים בחדשות, דיווחים וכתיבה פורמלית, והם יוצרים ריחוק — הכותב לא טוען שזה נכון.

פעלים נפוצים: say, think, believe, know, consider, expect, report, understand, allege, estimate. עם consider, אפשר להשמיט את to be: He is considered (to be) the best player.

💡ה-'it' בדפוס 1 הוא נושא ריק — אי אפשר להשמיט אותו. לומדים ששפת האם שלהם לא כוללת נושא כזה לעיתים כותבים “Is said that…”. אם רוצים להשאיר את “people”, יש להשתמש בסביל הפעיל: People say that… — ולא “People are said that…”.

בדפוס 2, צורת המקור (האינפיניטיב) מראה אם הדבר שמדווחים עליו קורה באותו הזמן, לפני או אחרי האמירה או האמונה:

• Coffee is thought to have been brought to Vietnam by the French.

  מקובל לחשוב שקפה הובא לווייטנאם על ידי הצרפתים.

• The singer is reported to be in hospital.

  מדווח שהזמר נמצא בבית חולים.

• More than 300 people are known to have attended the meeting.

  ידוע שיותר מ-300 אנשים השתתפו בפגישה.

is said / is believed = אנשים אומרים או מאמינים בכך עכשיו. was said / was believed = אנשים אמרו או האמינו בכך בעבר (אולי כבר לא). אפשר גם להשתמש בהווה מושלם: It has been reported that…

• The Earth was once believed to be flat.

  פעם האמינו שכדור הארץ שטוח.

• The ship was thought to have sunk in a storm.

  חשבו שהספינה טבעה בסערה.

• It has been reported that two people were injured.

  דווח ששני אנשים נפצעו.

עם there: There is said to be… = It is said that there is… בשיחה יומיומית, לרוב לא משתמשים בדפוסים האלו; במקום זה אומרים They say…, Apparently… או be supposed to (= אנשים אומרים).

• There are thought to be fewer than a hundred of these birds left in the wild.

  חושבים שנותרו פחות ממאה מהציפורים האלה בטבע.

• That new pho place is supposed to be really good.

  אומרים שהמסעדה הפו החדשה ממש טובה.

• They say the shop on the corner is closing down.

  אומרים שהחנות בפינה עומדת להיסגר.

💡be supposed to יכולה להיות גם במשמעות של "צריך, לפי כלל או תכנון" (You're supposed to wear a helmet). ראו את השיעור “Be supposed to / about to / likely to”.

  יש צורך בנושא הריק It.

• ✗He is believed to steal the money last year.

  ✓He is believed to have stolen the money last year.

  זה קרה קודם → to have + V3.

• ✗The museum is known being the oldest in the city.

  ✓The museum is known to be the oldest in the city.

  be known / said / thought + to-verb, לא -ing.

• ✗People say him to be very rich.

  ✓He is said to be very rich. / People say that he is very rich.

  say לא מקבל דפוס פעיל של say + person + to-verb.

• ✗The lake says to be very deep.

  ✓The lake is said to be very deep.

  אגם לא אומר כלום → יש להשתמש בסביל is said.

• ✗She is said to be won the prize twice.

  ✓She is said to have won the prize twice.

  פעולה בעבר, פעיל → to have + V3.
