Woord voor woord vertalen uit het Nederlands levert vaak het verkeerde voorzetsel op: je zit “in de bus”, maar on the bus; een schilderij hangt “aan de muur”, maar on the wall; je staat “op de foto”, maar in the photo. Hele uitdrukkingen leren is sneller en veiliger.

Thuis zijn is at home — zonder the, en niet in home. Naar huis gaan is go home; zie de les “Voorzetsels van beweging: to / at / in / into”.
3.In of at: steden en gebouwen
Steden en landen → altijd in: in Hue, in Japan. Bij gebouwen (een school, een bank, een bioscoop, een station, een hotel) gebruiken we meestal at als je daar bent met een bepaald doel, en in om te benadrukken dat je binnen bent. Bij iemand thuis: at Lan's (house), at my grandma's.
I'm at the bank. I'll call you back.
Ik ben bij de bank. Ik bel je zo terug.
It's really cold in the cinema, so bring a jacket.
Het is echt koud in de bioscoop, dus neem een jas mee. (nadruk op binnen)
We stayed at a small hotel in Hoi An.
We logeerden in een klein hotel in Hoi An.
We had dinner at my grandma's.
We hebben bij oma gegeten. (at + iemands = bij iemand thuis)

Er zit een apotheek tegenover mijn huis, aan de overkant van de weg.
A tall man was standing in front of me, so I couldn't see.
Er stond een lange man voor me, dus ik kon niets zien.
Haal in front of en opposite niet door elkaar. Een mangoboom vlak voor je huis, aan dezelfde kant van de weg, staat in front of your house. Een huis aan de overkant van de weg, met de voorkant naar het jouwe, staat opposite yours (tegenover). Onthoud ook: opposite staat meestal direct vóór het zelfstandig naamwoord; next to heeft to nodig; in front of heeft of nodig.
5.Veelgemaakte fouten

Landen en steden → in.

Bij je eigen huis zijn = at home.
