Preposições de lugar: in / on / at

Iniciante

Prepositions of place: in / on / at

Forma e uso

in the box, on the wall, at the door, next to, between, opposite — dizer onde algo está

1.In, on, at — três ideias básicas

PreposiçãoIdeiaExemplos

onsobre uma superfície, encostado nela: uma mesa, uma parede, o chão, uma páginaon the table, on the wall, on the floor, on page 12
atum ponto, um lugar onde você fica, se encontra com alguém ou faz algoat the door, at the bus stop, at the traffic lights, at the counter

  • I'll wait for you at the gate.

    Te espero no portão.

  • My brother lives in Da Nang.

Meu irmão mora em Da Nang.

Traduzir palavra por palavra do português costuma dar a preposição errada, porque o nosso “em” pode virar in, on ou at: um pássaro está in the sky, e não on, e um passageiro está on the bus, e não in. Aprender expressões inteiras é mais rápido e mais seguro.

2.Expressões comuns

inonat
in the sky, in the seaon the left, on the rightat home, at work, at school
in a photo, in the mirroron the ground floor, on the third floorat the top / at the bottom of the page

  • We met at a friend's wedding.

A gente se conheceu no casamento de um amigo.

  • Write your name at the top of the form.

Escreva seu nome no alto do formulário.

Estar em casa é at home — sem the, e não in home. Ir para casa é go home; veja a lição “Preposições de movimento: to / at / in / into”.

3.In ou at: cidades e prédios

Cidades e países → sempre in: in Hue, in Japan. Com prédios (uma escola, um banco, um cinema, uma estação, um hotel), normalmente usamos at para dizer que você está ali com um propósito, e in para destacar que está dentro do prédio. A casa de alguém: at Lan's (house), at my grandma's.

  • I'm at the bank. I'll call you back.

Estou no banco.

Lembre também: opposite geralmente vem direto antes do substantivo; next to precisa de to; in front of precisa de of.
