1.In, on, at — три основные идеи

Дословный перевод с русского часто даёт неверный предлог: по-русски «в автобусе», а по-английски on the bus; «на работе» — at work; «на вечеринке» — at a party; зато «в небе» — in the sky. Учить целые выражения быстрее и надёжнее.

Write your name at the top of the form.

Быть у себя дома — at home, без the и не in home. Идти туда — go home; см. урок «Предлоги движения: to / at / in / into».
3.In или at: города и здания
С городами и странами — всегда in: in Hue, in Japan. Со зданиями (школа, банк, кинотеатр, вокзал, гостиница) обычно используют at, чтобы сказать, что ты там с какой-то целью, и in — чтобы подчеркнуть, что ты внутри здания. У кого-то дома: at Lan's (house), at my grandma's.
I'm at the bank. I'll call you back.
Я в банке. Я тебе перезвоню.
It's really cold in the cinema, so bring a jacket.
В кинотеатре очень холодно, так что возьми куртку. (подчёркиваем «внутри»)
We stayed at a small hotel in Hoi An.
Мы остановились в маленькой гостинице в Хойане.
We had dinner at my grandma's.
Мы ужинали у бабушки. (at + чей-то = у кого-то дома)

The post office is between the bank and the police station.
Почта находится между банком и полицейским участком.
There's a pharmacy opposite my house, across the road.
Напротив моего дома, через дорогу, есть аптека.
A tall man was standing in front of me, so I couldn't see.
Передо мной стоял высокий мужчина, поэтому мне ничего не было видно.
Не путай in front of и opposite. Манговое дерево прямо у твоего дома, на той же стороне дороги, — in front of your house. Дом на другой стороне дороги, лицом к твоему, — opposite yours. И помни: после opposite существительное обычно идёт сразу; next to требует to; in front of требует of.

Страны и города → in.

Пол — это поверхность → on.

Быть у себя дома = at home.

События (вечеринки, встречи, концерты) → at.

next to требует to.
