Both / either / neither — זוגות חיבור

שלושת הזוגות האלו מחברים שני רעיונות מאותו סוג — שני שמות עצם, שני שמות תואר, שני פעלים או שתי צירופים — ומבהירים שמתכוונים ל-שניהם, לאחד מהשניים או לאף אחד מהם.

• She's both clever and hard-working.

  היא חכמה וגם חרוצה.

• You can pay either in cash or by card.

  אפשר לשלם במזומן או בכרטיס.

• The room was neither clean nor quiet.

  החדר לא היה נקי וגם לא שקט.

• Either you tell her, or I will.

  או שאת/ם תגידו לה, או שאני אגיד.

💡למדו אותם כזוגות קבועים: both – and, either – or, neither – nor. אל תערבבו ביניהם כמו “both … or” או “neither … or”. (“Neither … or” נשמע לפעמים בדיבור יומיומי, אבל נחשב לטעות בכתיבה ובמבחנים.)

הניחו both / either / neither ממש לפני החלק הראשון, ודאגו ששני החלקים יהיו מאותו סוג של מילה: שם עצם עם שם עצם, תואר עם תואר, פועל עם פועל.

• I play both the guitar and the piano.

  אני מנגן גם בגיטרה וגם בפסנתר.

• You can either call or text me.

  אפשר להתקשר או לשלוח לי הודעה.

• We neither saw nor heard anything strange.

  לא ראינו ולא שמענו שום דבר מוזר.

בדיבור, המיקום של either גמיש יותר (She either lives in Hue or in Da Nang). בכתיבה ובמבחנים, שמרו על איזון בין החלקים: She lives either in Hue or in Da Nang.

• both … and → תמיד רבים (שני אנשים או דברים): Both my phone and my laptop are broken.
• either … or / neither … nor → הפועל מתאים לשם העצם הקרוב אליו ביותר: Neither the bus nor the train was on time. / Either my parents or my sister is coming.
• neither … nor כבר שלילה → הפועל חיובי: Neither Tuan nor his wife can drive (לא can't).

💡כשיש שני שמות עצם ביחיד אחרי neither … nor, הרבה דוברי אנגלית משתמשים בפועל ברבים בדיבור (Neither Lan nor Minh are…). בכתיבה תקנית ובמבחנים, השתמשו ביחיד: Neither Lan nor Minh is here.

שלוש המילים האלו יכולות להופיע גם לפני שם עצם, או עם of, כשמדובר על שני אנשים או דברים.

• both: of הוא רשות לפני the / my (both (of) my parents), אבל חובה לפני כינוי גוף (both of us). אל תגידו “the both”.
• either / neither + שם עצם יחיד: either day, neither answer.
• neither of / either of + רבים: פועל ביחיד (יותר פורמלי) או פועל ברבים (בדיבור) — שתי האפשרויות תקינות: Neither of them is / are at home.
• בשימוש עצמאי כתשובה: Tea or coffee? — Either. / Both, please. / Neither, thanks.

• Both of us were tired after the trip.

  שנינו היינו עייפים אחרי הטיול.

• I asked two people for directions, but neither of them knew.

  שאלתי שני אנשים איך להגיע, ואף אחד מהם לא ידע.

• Can either of you help me on Saturday?

  מישהו מכם יכול לעזור לי בשבת?

• We can meet on either day. I'm free on both.

  אפשר להיפגש בכל אחד מהימים. אני פנוי בשניהם.

כשהפועל כבר בשלילה, השתמשו ב-either, לא ב-neither: I don't like either of them = I like neither of them. באותו אופן: I don't eat either meat or fish = I eat neither meat nor fish. התשובה “גם אני, בשלילה” (Neither do I / Me neither) נמצאת בשיעור “So do I” / “I think so”.

• I don't like either of these shirts.

  אני לא אוהב אף אחד מהחולצות האלה.

• I like neither of these shirts.

  אני לא אוהב אף אחת מהחולצות האלה.

• I have two brothers, and both of them work in Saigon.

  יש לי שני אחים, ושניהם עובדים בסייגון.

• I have five cousins, and all of them live in Hue.

  יש לי חמישה בני דודים, וכולם גרים בהואה.

• ✗Both my father or my mother work at the hospital.

  ✓Both my father and my mother work at the hospital.

• ✗The film was neither funny or exciting.

  neither הולך עם nor.

• ✗I don't like neither of them.

  רק מילה שלילית אחת.

• ✗Neither Tuan nor his wife can't drive.

  neither כבר שלילה → פועל חיובי.

• ✗Both of them was late.

  both → פועל ברבים.

• ✗The both restaurants are good.

  אל תשתמשו ב-the לפני both.
