Comparativi
PrincipianteComparatives
Forma e uso
-er than / more … than — confrontare due cose
1.Forma
Gli aggettivi brevi aggiungono -er; quelli lunghi vogliono more davanti. Poi viene than + il termine di paragone.
| Aggettivo | Come si forma | Esempi |
|---|---|---|
| una sillaba | + -er | cheap → cheaper, old → older, fast → faster |
| due sillabe, finisce in -y | y → -ier | easy → easier, busy → busier, happy → happier |
| quasi tutti gli altri aggettivi di due sillabe e tutti quelli più lunghi | more + aggettivo | more modern, more careful, more expensive, more interesting |
| alcuni aggettivi di due sillabe: tutte e due le forme | -er / more | quieter / more quiet, simpler / more simple, narrower / more narrow |
| good, bad, far | irregolare | good / well → better, bad / badly → worse, far → farther / further |
Ho Chi Minh City is bigger than Hue.
Ho Chi Minh City è più grande di Hue.
Taxis are more expensive than buses.
I taxi costano più degli autobus.
This year's exam was easier than last year's.
Usa -er oppure more, non tutti e due: cheaper, more expensive (non more cheaper). E la parola del confronto è sempre than, non that o then, che si scrivono e si pronunciano in modo simile.
2.Ortografia e pronuncia
| L'aggettivo finisce in | Regola | Esempi |
|---|---|---|
| -e | aggiungi solo -r | nice → nicer, large → larger, safe → safer |
| una vocale + una consonante (una sillaba) | raddoppia l'ultima consonante | big → bigger, hot → hotter, thin → thinner, wet → wetter |
| consonante + y | y → -ier | easy → easier, heavy → heavier, dry → drier |
| vocale + w | nessun raddoppio, aggiungi solo -er | new → newer, slow → slower, low → lower |
Nel parlato than di solito è debole, /ðən/, e si lega alla parola precedente; l'accento cade sull'aggettivo: She's TALLer than me. Non perdere la terminazione -er.
3.Quando si usa
1. Confrontare due persone, cose o luoghi
My sister is taller than me.
Mia sorella è più alta di me.
Hanoi is colder than Ho Chi Minh City in January.
2. Confrontare qualcosa con se stesso in un altro momento: than before, than usual, than I expected
The traffic is worse than usual today.
Oggi il traffico è peggio del solito.
The film was longer than I expected.
3. Confrontare come le persone fanno le cose (avverbi): gli avverbi in -ly vogliono more: more slowly, more carefully. Ma fast, hard, early e late aggiungono -er; well → better, badly → worse.
Could you speak more slowly, please?
Potresti parlare più lentamente, per favore?
My mum gets up earlier than my dad.
Lan cooks better than I do.
Lan cucina meglio di me.
4. Più e meno: more / less / fewer: more + sostantivo (more money, more friends); less + sostantivo non numerabile (less traffic); fewer + sostantivo plurale (fewer cars).
My cousin earns more money than me.
Mio cugino guadagna più soldi di me.
There's less traffic in Hanoi during Tet.
Durante il Tet a Hanoi c'è meno traffico.
The bus is less expensive than the train.
L'autobus costa meno del treno. (= è più economico)
4.Than me o than I am? Quanto di più?
Dopo than hai due possibilità: un pronome complemento (than me, than him), molto naturale nel parlato; oppure soggetto + ausiliare (than I am, than he does), che va bene in qualsiasi registro. “than I” da solo suona piuttosto formale.
My brother is taller than me. = My brother is taller than I am.
Mio fratello è più alto di me.
She speaks English better than her husband does.
My sister is three years older than me.
This shirt is 50,000 dong cheaper online.
Online questa camicia costa 50.000 dong in meno.
La differenza va prima del comparativo: three years older than me, non older than me three years.
5.Errori comuni
This bag is more cheaper than that one. This bag is cheaper than that one.
Ha già -er, quindi niente more.
This road is more long than the old one. This road is longer than the old one.
Gli aggettivi di una sillaba aggiungono -er.
My sister is taller as me.My sister is taller than me.
