1
Welcome to this set of guided meditations on mindfulness in daily life, offered by the monks and nuns of Plum Village.
2
In these exercises, we will explore several mindfulness practices that can be applied throughout the day,
3
at work, at home, wherever we happen to be, whatever we happen to be doing.
4
What is mindfulness?
5
Mindfulness is simply the energy of being aware of and awake to everything that is happening in the present moment.
6
Right now, in this moment,
7
you can be aware of your body and your breath and whatever is happening in and around you.
8
This is mindfulness.
9
Mindfulness is always mindfulness of something.
10
If you drink a cup of tea and you know you are drinking a cup of tea, that is mindfulness of drinking tea.
11
Very often when we do something, our mind is elsewhere.
12
We worry about the future or we regret the past.
13
And our tea or delicious meal or the presence of a loved one becomes like a dream or a ghost,
14
we are not really there at all.
15
As we drink our cup of tea, our mind is occupied and we may not even notice the fragrance of the tea.
16
We are really drinking our projects and our worries.
17
We are not drinking the tea at all.
18
When we bring our mind back to the present moment
19
and simply pay attention to whatever we are doing as we are doing it, that is mindfulness.
20
Drinking tea in mindfulness is like that.
21
We are really there for the tea, and the tea is really there for us.
22
We begin to savor life again and become present for the miracle of life that is unfolding around us.
23
We can practice brushing our teeth and be aware that we are brushing our teeth.
24
That is mindfulness of brushing our teeth.
25
We can wash the dishes and be aware of every moment.
26
We can be aware of every movement of our hands as we scrub the dish,
27
of the warm water, the soapy bubbles.
28
That is mindfulness of washing the dishes.
29
When we walk, we can bring our attention to the contact of our foot with the earth beneath us,
30
to all the sensations of our body, to our breath and our steps. That is mindful walking.
31
When you're angry and you become aware that you're angry,
32
that is mindfulness of anger or of any other feeling or emotion.
33
When you are thinking and you become aware of your thoughts, This is mindfulness of thinking.
34
We can also simply bring our attention to our breath,
35
aware of our in-breath and aware of our out-breath.
36
This is mindful breathing.
37
With more awareness of these activities in our daily life and of our feelings and thoughts,
38
we will begin to understand more about ourself and our interaction with others.
39
Whatever we do in mindfulness throughout the day, we are cultivating the energy of mindfulness in our lives,
40
becoming more aware and awake to the wonders of life all around us.
41
We establish ourselves fully in the present moment.
42
And as we do that, we may discover many wonderful things.
43
In each of these meditations, you will be invited to experience a different aspect of mindfulness.
44
beginning with mindfulness of the body, then of the feelings, of the mind,
45
your relationships, and of your work environment.
46
You can just listen to one at a time or all of them in one session.
47
We hope that these meditations can be a support for you as you develop the energy of awareness in your life
48
and that they can help you to bring more peace, joy, and stillness to each moment of your day.

Practice Tips

  • Listen to the transcript while following along: This will help with understanding the context of the words used.
  • Repeat phrases out loud: Use the shadow speech method by repeating what you hear immediately after the speaker. This will help improve your English pronunciation.
  • Focus on breathing: When practicing mindfulness of breathing, align your speech rhythm with your breath to create a calm and natural speaking pace.
  • Engage with the content: As you repeat, feel the emotions behind the words to connect better with the meanings and improve your oral fluency.
  • Record yourself: Listen back to your recordings to identify areas for improvement in pronunciation and flow.

By using a shadowing site or simply the video, you can enhance your skills in mindfulness while practicing your English speaking. Engaging in this dual practice of mindfulness and language can lead to a more enriching learning experience.
