On time / in time, at the end / in the end

on time = בזמן שנקבע, לפי לוח זמנים או סיכום — לא באיחור. נפוץ בשימוש עם רכבות, אוטובוסים, פגישות, שיעורים ודד-ליינים. ההפך הוא late.

• The train left on time, at 8:00 exactly.

  הרכבת יצאה בזמן, בדיוק בשעה 8:00.

• Please be on time tomorrow. The meeting starts at nine.

  בבקשה להגיע בזמן מחר. הפגישה מתחילה בתשע.

• Hai is never on time. He's always ten minutes late.

in time = מוקדם מספיק כדי לעשות משהו או לפני שמשהו קורה. יש שני דפוסים נפוצים: in time for + שם עצם ו-in time to + פועל בסיס. ההפך הוא too late.

• We got to the cinema in time for the start of the film.

💡בדיקה מהירה: לשאול “האם זה היה מאוחר לעומת התכנון?” → on time. לשאול “האם זה היה מוקדם מספיק כדי לעשות משהו?” → in time.

• just in time = בדיוק מוקדם מספיק; רגע אחד מאוחר יותר היה מאוחר מדי.
• in good time (בעיקר בריטי) = מוקדם, עם זמן פנוי לפני.
• in time בפני עצמו יכול גם להיות במשמעות בסופו של דבר, אחרי זמן מה — לא קשור ללוח זמנים.
• אף אחת מהביטויים לא מקבלת תווית יידוע: לא אומרים “on the time” או “in the time” במשמעויות האלה.

• The ambulance arrived just in time.

  האמבולנס הגיע בדיוק בזמן.

• We left early and got to the airport in good time.

  יצאנו מוקדם והגענו לשדה התעופה עם זמן פנוי.

• It hurts now, but in time you'll forget about it.

at the end (of something) = בחלק האחרון של תקופה, אירוע או מקום. לרוב מופיע עם of: at the end of the month / the film / the class / the street. כשברור למה מתכוונים, אפשר להשמיט את החלק של of ….

• We pay the rent at the end of the month.

• Everyone cried at the end of the film.

  כולם בכו בסוף הסרט.

• Our house is at the end of the street.

in the end = לבסוף, בסופו של דבר — התוצאה אחרי תהליך ארוך, הרבה שינויים, התלבטויות או בעיות. בדרך כלל מופיע בתחילת או בסוף המשפט, ו-לא בא אחרי of.

• We couldn't decide where to go, so in the end we stayed at home.

  לא הצלחנו להחליט לאן ללכת, אז בסוף נשארנו בבית.

• The exam was really hard, but in the end I passed.

💡אם יש of אחרי הביטוי, כמעט תמיד זה at: at the end of the film, לא “in the end of the film”. In the end מופיע לבד ומשמעותו “לבסוף”.

In the beginning מדגיש “כך היה בהתחלה, ואחר כך זה השתנה”, כמו at first. At the beginning of + זמן או דבר מסוים פשוט אומר החלק הראשון שלו.

• In the beginning, living alone was hard, but now I love it.

  בהתחלה היה קשה לגור לבד, אבל עכשיו אני אוהב את זה.

• The rainy season starts at the beginning of May.

  העונה הגשומה מתחילה בתחילת מאי.
