Forma passiva
IntermedioPassive voice
Forma e uso
1.Forma
La forma passiva è be + participio passato (V3).
Someone cleans the office every evening. → The office is cleaned every evening.
Qualcuno pulisce l'ufficio ogni sera. → L'ufficio viene pulito ogni sera.
A taxi driver found my wallet. → My wallet was found by a taxi driver.
| Tempo verbale | Forma attiva | Forma passiva |
|---|---|---|
| Present simple | They clean the room every day. | The room is cleaned every day. |
| Present continuous | They are cleaning the room. | The room is being cleaned. |
| Past simple | They cleaned the room. | The room was cleaned. |
| Past continuous | They were cleaning the room. | The room was being cleaned. |
| Present perfect | They have cleaned the room. | The room has been cleaned. |
| Past perfect | They had cleaned the room. | The room had been cleaned. |
| Futuro con will | They will clean the room. | The room will be cleaned. |
| Be going to | They are going to clean the room. | The room is going to be cleaned. |
- Negativa: metti not dopo il primo ausiliare — The email wasn't sent. / It hasn't been fixed yet.
- Domanda: sposta il primo ausiliare prima del soggetto — Was it sent? / Has it been fixed? / When was this house built?
- I tempi perfect continuous (has been being done…) non si usano quasi mai al passivo.
Dopo can, must, should, may, might, will, have to, need to… usa be + V3. Per il passato, usa modale + have been + V3.
All phones must be turned off during the exam.
Tutti i telefoni devono essere spenti durante l'esame.
This problem can't be solved without a calculator.

(should have been + V3: qualcosa che sarebbe dovuto succedere)
My bag isn't here. It might have been taken by mistake.
La mia borsa non è qui. Forse l'hanno presa per sbaglio.
Dopo un verbo che regge to + verbo, usa to be + V3; dopo una preposizione o un verbo che regge la forma in -ing (like, hate, avoid, enjoy…), usa being + V3.
I want to be told the truth.
Voglio sentirmi dire la verità.
I hate being told what to do.
Odio sentirmi dire cosa fare.
She left without being seen.
È uscita senza essere vista.
3.Quando si usa

Coffee is grown in the Central Highlands.
Il caffè viene coltivato negli Altopiani Centrali.
He was arrested last night.
È stato arrestato ieri sera. (ovviamente dalla polizia)
Our school was built in 1965.
La nostra scuola è stata costruita nel 1965.
These shoes are made in Vietnam.
Queste scarpe sono fabbricate in Vietnam.
Your order hasn't been sent yet.
3. Stile formale: avvisi, notizie, istruzioni, relazioni

La colazione viene servita dalle 6 alle 9.
Two people were injured in the crash.
Due persone sono rimaste ferite nell'incidente.

I risultati verranno annunciati venerdì.
Nella conversazione di tutti i giorni, chi parla inglese usa spesso la forma attiva con un soggetto generico come they, people, someone, you: They're building a new mall near my house (= Stanno costruendo un nuovo centro commerciale vicino a casa mia).
4.By + chi compie l'azione
This picture was painted by my uncle.
Our cat was bitten by the neighbour's dog.
Rice noodles are made from rice flour.
(senza by: chi li fa non importa)
- by + la persona o la cosa che compie l'azione: The roof was damaged by the storm.
- with + lo strumento usato: The door was opened with a spare key.
- made of (il materiale si vede ancora), made from (il materiale si è trasformato), made in (il luogo): a table made of wood, paper is made from wood, made in Japan.
5.Alcuni casi particolari
- Verbi con due oggetti (give, send, offer, show, tell, teach, pay…): di solito il soggetto diventa la persona — I was given a free ticket. A free ticket was given to me è possibile, ma meno comune.
- Born è sempre passivo: I was born in Hue (non: I born / I am born).
- I verbi con preposizione mantengono la preposizione dopo il V3: The shop was broken into. / The kids are looked after by their grandma.
- I verbi senza oggetto, come happen, arrive, die, appear, disappear, occur, non hanno il passivo: The accident happened at 8 a.m.
- Nell'inglese parlato si usa anche get + V3 (got stolen, get paid): vedi la lezione “La forma passiva con “get””. Frasi come It is said that… hanno una lezione tutta loro: “It is said that…”.

6.Errori comuni

In inglese “born” è passivo: si dice sempre be born.
The accident was happened near the school. The accident happened near the school.
The letter was write by my grandmother. The letter was written by my grandmother.
The meeting has postponed. The meeting has been postponed.
La riunione non ha rinviato niente: il present perfect passivo è has been + V3.
This problem can't solve without a calculator. This problem can't be solved without a calculator.
