“So … that” / “such … that”

So … that ו-such … that משמעותם "במידה כזו ש…": החלק הראשון מראה דרגה גבוהה מאוד, ופסוקית that מציגה את התוצאה. ההבדל: so באה עם תואר או תואר הפועל, such באה עם שם עצם.

בדיבור, לעיתים משמיטים את that: I was so tired I fell asleep on the bus.

שימו לב למה שמופיע מיד אחרי המקום החסר. רק תואר או תואר הפועל → so. שם עצם (גם אם יש תואר לפניו) → such. עם שם עצם ספיר יחיד, יש לשים a / an אחרי such.

• The test was so easy that everyone passed.

  המבחן היה כל כך קל שכולם עברו.

• It was such an easy test that everyone passed.

  זה היה מבחן כל כך קל שכולם עברו.

• The kids were so noisy that the neighbours complained.

  הילדים היו כל כך רועשים שהשכנים התלוננו.

• They were such noisy kids that the neighbours complained.

  הם היו ילדים כל כך רועשים שהשכנים התלוננו.

• She speaks such good English that people think she grew up in London.

  היא מדברת אנגלית כל כך טובה שאנשים חושבים שהיא גדלה בלונדון.

אחרי פועל רגיל משתמשים ב-so + adverb: He drove so carefully that… (לא: so careful).

💡הבחירה בין so ל-such תלויה רק במה שמופיע אחריהן. שאלו את עצמכם: "האם יש שם עצם אחרי המקום החסר?" כן → such (a); לא → so. התבנית so + adjective + a + noun (so good a film) קיימת גם היא, אך היא מאוד פורמלית ונדירה.

לפני מילת כמות, משתמשים ב-so, לא ב-such: so many / so few + שם עצם ברבים, so much / so little + שם עצם בלתי ספיר. Such a lot of מתאים לשני הסוגים.

• There were so many motorbikes that the traffic didn't move for an hour.

  היו כל כך הרבה אופנועים שהפקק לא זז שעה שלמה.

• I've got so much homework that I can't go out tonight.

  יש לי כל כך הרבה שיעורי בית שאני לא יכול לצאת הערב.

• So few students signed up that the class was cancelled.

  כל כך מעט תלמידים נרשמו שהשיעור בוטל.

• We had so little time that we skipped breakfast.

  היה לנו כל כך מעט זמן שדילגנו על ארוחת הבוקר.

• There was such a lot of noise that I couldn't hear the teacher.

  היה כל כך הרבה רעש שלא הצלחתי לשמוע את המורה.

Very רק מציין דרגה; אי אפשר להוסיף אחריו פסוקית that. So … that מציג תוצאה. Too … to פירושו "יותר ממה שאפשר או מקובל" — ראו את השיעור "Too … to / enough to". בלי that, so / such פשוט מחזקים רגשית את המשמעות, חזקים יותר מ-very.

• The coffee was so strong that I couldn't sleep.

  הקפה היה כל כך חזק שלא הצלחתי להירדם.

• The coffee was too strong for me to drink.

  הקפה היה חזק מדי בשבילי לשתות.

• Thanks for the flowers — you're so kind!

  תודה על הפרחים — את/ם כל כך נחמדים!

💡אין להשתמש ב-very … that או too … that: I was so hungry that I ate two bowls (לא: very hungry that / too hungry that).

So ו-such לא תמיד מובילים לתוצאה. בלי משפט that, הם יכולים להצביע על משהו שכבר ידוע או שמפתיע אתכם: דרגה שבדיוק ראיתם, שמעתם או הזכרתם. המשמעות קרובה ל"כמו זה" או "עד כדי כך". משתמשים ב-so + שם תואר / תואר הפועל וב-such + שם עצם, כרגיל.

• I didn't expect the bill to be so high.

  לא ציפיתי שהחשבון יהיה כל כך גבוה.

• Why are you walking so fast?

  למה אתה הולך כל כך מהר?

• Why did you pack such a big suitcase?

  למה ארזת מזוודה כל כך גדולה?

• I've never eaten such sweet mangoes.

  מעולם לא אכלתי מנגו מתוק כל כך.

השוו ל-very, שנותן מידע חדש. The bill was very high פשוט מתאר את החשבון. I didn't expect it to be so high פירושו "גבוה עד כדי כך": שנינו יודעים את הסכום.

No such + שם עצם אומר שמשהו לא קיים. אין a אחרי such.

• There's no such word as “goed” in English.

  אין מילה כזאת “goed” באנגלית.

• She gave me an address, but there's no such street in Hue.

  היא נתנה לי כתובת, אבל אין רחוב כזה בהואה.

• There's no such thing as a free meal.

  אין דבר כזה ארוחה חינם.

Long ו-far פועלים לפי הכלל הרגיל. בלי שם עצם, משתמשים ב-so. עם שמות העצם time ו-way, משתמשים ב-such a long.

  אין שם עצם ← so; עם time ← such a long.
