was seen by many to be the fulfillment of prophecies made by Isaiah and Malachi.

Hundreds of years earlier, these Jewish prophets predicted a man in the desert who would prepare a way for the Messiah.

and the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain.

And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.
