1
On the morning of the thirtieth of June, 1908,
2
a blinding fireball streaked across the sky over Siberia.
3
Moments later, it exploded with a force that's hard to imagine.
4
Eighty million trees were flattened in an instant!
5
And yet, when scientists finally reached the site, there was no crater.
6
So what on earth happened?
7
The area around the Tunguska River was, and still is, remarkably remote,
8
and the nearest witnesses were at a trading post sixty kilometres away.
9
One man, who was sitting on the porch, was hurled off his chair,
10
and he later recalled feeling as if his shirt had caught fire.
11
The shock wave was picked up by instruments as far away as Britain!
12
Stranger still, for several nights afterwards, the skies over Europe glowed,
13
and Londoners could reportedly read a newspaper outdoors at midnight!
14
Nobody at the time had any idea what had caused it,
15
and with war and revolution sweeping through Russia,
16
it would be almost two decades before anyone investigated.
17
When the scientist Leonid Kulik finally arrived in 1927,
18
he was convinced he'd find a giant meteorite in a crater,
19
but what he found instead was even more puzzling.
20
The fallen trees all pointed away from a single central point,
21
yet at the very centre, trees were still standing upright!
22
They'd simply been stripped of their branches, like telegraph poles.
23
It's now widely accepted that the object never actually hit the ground.
24
Instead, it's thought to have exploded several kilometres up,
25
and only its blast reached the forest below.
26
Trees farther out were knocked flat by the blast,
27
whereas those directly beneath were hit from above and stayed standing.
28
It may have been a thousand times stronger than Hiroshima,
29
but whether it was an asteroid or a comet is still debated.
30
Over the years, the mystery has fuelled some wilder theories,
31
from a tiny black hole to an alien spaceship,
32
but none of them stands up to scrutiny.
33
Had it arrived just a few hours later,
34
it could have exploded over a major city.
35
That isn't just a hypothetical.
36
In 2013, when a much smaller rock exploded over Chelyabinsk in Russia,
37
around fifteen hundred people were injured, mostly by flying glass.
38
What Tunguska showed is that the sky isn't as empty as it looks.
39
Today, telescopes scan the sky for objects heading our way,
40
and in 2022, NASA deliberately crashed a spacecraft into a small asteroid
41
to see whether it could change its path.
42
It worked so well that the asteroid's orbit got thirty-two minutes shorter!
43
The more closely we watch the sky, the safer we're likely to be.
44
Perhaps we owe that forest a quiet thank you.
45
After all, it took the hit for us.
