Track 44 Good morning, everyone.
2
In this opening part of the presentation, I'll cover the recent work that the biology department has been involved in based on animal intelligence.
3
First, I'll give you a bit of basic background.
4
In 2001, we focused on monkeys and their capability to either fashion crude tools or take advantage of naturally occurring ones.
5
then in 2007 we turned our thoughts to higher level thinking
6
and in particular numeracy we conducted a significant piece of research
7
to find out whether birds are in fact able to count the findings amazed everyone
8
and caused quite a stir around the world this helped to spur us on
9
and allowed us to expand the department making it the world
10
-class facility it is today however it's not without its drawbacks
11
and there are several difficulties
12
that are peculiar to this type of study firstly this type
13
of research is generally prolonged as we have to spend extensive
14
periods gaining the animal's trust in terms of resources it can
15
also be very costly to run as we need to employ
16
a large number of supplementary staff to assist us for the length of the study
17
and finally there is the question of the physical facilities themselves.
18
We often have to try to find more space just to simply house the animals, which can be quite an arduous chore.
19
Which leads me to our present study and the one we are going to look at today.
20
Our subject this time is elephants.
21
We knew there was simply no way of accommodating them on campus, so I have been carrying out field work at the Bronx Zoo.
